CANAAN, NH — Ruby Dell McAlister, 90, died peacefully December 22, 2020 at Alice Peck Day Hospital in Lebanon, NH.
She was born March 23, 1930 in Grafton, NH. A daughter of Martha (Brown) Powell and Harry Powell.
Ruby was married to Gordon E. McAlister on June 16, 1947. She always spoke about their wonderful wedding trip to the White Mountains of NH. Gordon died April 29, 2013 at 86.
Ruby enjoyed her many nieces and nephews. She always looked forward to any news from them she could share with the rest of the family.
For many years Ruby volunteered at the Mascoma Area Senior Center in Canaan NH. She looked forward to seeing the many friends she had there.
Ruby’s home was always a special place, made special by her super skill at baking beans, pies, cookies and her homemade ice cream was the best. In every nook by any window she had pretty house plants and looked forward to their blooms.
As the snow melted each spring, Ruby could be seen in her gardens. She always had fresh cut flowers in her home. When summer came Ruby loved to pick berries and make pies, jams, and jelly for family and friends. When fall arrived Ruby looked forward to the annual trip to Pittsburg, NH and the cabin she and her husband built.
Ruby is survived by her three sons Robert G. McAlister of Canaan NH, his wife Bonnie McAlister and their two children Heather Gokey and her husband William Gokey both of Weathersfield, VT, Andrew McAlister of Canaan, NH and his wife Vicki McAlister and their sons Cody and Caleb McAlister. Son Dennis K. McAlister of Canaan, NH his wife Barbara McAlister and their two children James McAlister of Orange, NH and his wife Jenna McAlister and their son Steven. Elizabeth Houghton and her husband Andrew Houghton and their two sons Justin and Gregory all live in Dorchester, NH. Raymond McAlister, Ruby’s youngest son lives in Enfield, NH.
She has two surviving sisters Barbara Dauphinais of Canaan, NH and Arlene Normandin of Hillsborough, NH.
Also two nephews. Jack McAlister and David McAlister and his wife Vicky McAlister and their two children, daughter Beth Reese and her husband Jonathan Reese and son Adam McAlister and his wife Jennifer McAlister and their daughter Scarlett who all live in Canaan, NH.
At Ruby’s request a graveside service will be held when it is safe to do so. A celebration of her life is planned for the summer of 2021.
