NEWPORT, N.H. — A 42-year-old Newport man is being held without bail after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman he had recently met on an internet dating site, according to Newport police.
Shaun Berge was arrested early Sunday morning after the woman told police on Saturday that she “had been repeatedly sexually assaulted” by him, Newport police said in a news release on Wednesday.
Berge was ordered “preliminarily detained” without bail at an arraignment on Monday in Sullivan Superior Court, the release said, and was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on 14 felony counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and three felony counts of second-degree assault.
Newport police are continuing to investigate, with help from New Hampshire State Police. Anyone with information about Berge was asked to call Newport Police Detective Stephen A. Lee at 603-863-3232 or New Hampshire State Police Trooper Michael Catalfamo at 603-223-8494.
Lee said Berge and the victim met through the app MeetMe. A bail hearing for Berge is expected to be held early in the new year, he said.
