BENNINGTON, VT — Philip E. Sargent, 72, passed away on July 28, 2020 surrounded by his fellow Veterans.
Philip was born November 25, 1947, in Dover, NH. He is survived by a brother Gary H. Sargent (Alice) of Ridgefield, NJ, two sisters Sandra J. Wells of Plainfield, VT and Charlene S. Leonard (Tom) of Hartland, VT, two sons Eric of Burlington, VT and Scott (Julie) of Wilmington, MA, two grandsons Jackson and Benjamin, a granddaughter Kaylee and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Dennis H. Sargent.
While living in Bethel, VT Philip was married to Marian Balch who passed away in July 2014. He formerly was married to Suzanne Perron Hill, mother of his two sons.
Philip grew up in Windsor, VT and attended the Windsor schools. He later received his GED. He joined the army and fought in the Vietnam War, and later he was stationed in Hawaii and Germany. After getting out of the army, Philip joined the National Guard in New Hampshire. Philip worked at Goodyear Tire and Co. in Windsor. He later worked as a custodian for Dartmouth College. He retired due to health issues, among them PTSD.
Philip charmed his way into many people’s lives. He lived in Claremont, NH, Bethel, VT, Altamonte Spring, FL, and South Royalton, VT. He later resided in the Vermont Veteran’s Home in Bennington. He made a generous donation for the building of a mobility trail at the Veteran’s Home.
Philip enjoyed “winning” at cards, and money drawings. He enjoyed scallop dinners, ice cream and watching the Red Sox. He rooted for the New York Giants and followed the Windsor and Woodstock high school sports teams. He was kind to others and remembered occasions by sending cards.
Philip will be buried in the Vermont Veteran’s cemetery in Ranolph, VT. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Windsor and White River Junction and later transferred to Bennington. He was recognized for his 50 years of membership in the American Legion. He was proud to have been a serviceman and received medals for his service in the Vietnam War.
Due to COVID 19 restrictions, memorial services with military honors will be held privately at a later date at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center, VT.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Veteran’s Home, 325 North St., Bennington, VT 05201.
