PLAINFIELD — Town officials have again postponed Town Meeting, this time until July 11, because of the coronavirus and are hoping to adopt a default budget instead.
Town Meeting had been pushed back from mid-March to this Saturday because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Selectboard last month rescheduled it to July 11.
Town officials have written Gov. Chris Sununu asking that he include an option for towns that have not held their Town Meeting to adopt a default budget based on 2019 spending. Plainfield held Australian ballot voting on March 10 to elect officers, but the March 14 business portion of the meeting was postponed.
It was to include a floor vote on a proposal to raise $183,000 in taxes to help pay for a new $1 million library in Meriden, but town officials now agree that issue should be tabled until next year, according to Town Administrator Steve Halleran. The format of the July 11 meeting, such as whether it might be held outside, has yet to be determined, Halleran said.
