HANOVER, NH — Marjorie Lovell Boley died on May 15, 2020 of natural causes.
Marj was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 5, 1926, the daughter of McDonald and Muriel (Price) Lovell. She followed in the footsteps of her father and grandfather who were both architects and graduated from Iowa State University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, the sole woman in the program. In 1946 she married Forrest Boley, a physicist and professor. In the pursuit of his career the family lived in Middletown, CT; Stockholm, Sweden; Berkeley, CA; and finally settled in Hanover in 1964.
In Hanover, Marj worked at Banwell White and Arnold Architects for more than nine years, followed by 17 years in the Facilities Planning Office at Dartmouth College, where she retired in June 1993 as Assistant Director of Facilities Planning. Marj loved riding her bike to work and always found time for a swim in Storrs Pond.
Marj enjoyed time with friends and being involved in community projects. She served on the Upper Valley-Lake Sunapee Council, the Hanover Planning Board, the Hanover Disabilities Access Committee, the Co-op Food Store Board of Directors, as manager of the Hanover Community Gardens and as a trustee for Howe Library.
Marj will be remembered for her ease with children, her love of books, her wonderful pumpkin pies and handknit sweaters and socks. In these rough times, we are reminded of one of her favorite adages, to “keep the corners turned up” and smile.
Survivors include her four children: Kathy Nickels, Sandy Gardner, Buck Boley and John Boley, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her sister Marion in 1996, and her former husband Forrest in 1997.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Howe Library Corporation; 13 South Street, Hanover, NH; where Marj enjoyed volunteering at the Circulation Desk.
At Marj’s request, a family memorial will be held at a later date
