CANAAN, NH — Margaret Helen (Leonard) Godfrey, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 18, 2020 at her daughter’s home after a decline in health. She was born on June 16, 1935 in Lebanon, NH, the daughter of Harry and Helen (Leware) Leonard.
Margaret graduated from West Lebanon High School Class of 1953. Margaret married Franklin G. Godfrey of Thetford on March 17, 1956. They spent most of their married life residing in Thetford, VT, moving to Fairlee, VT in 1983.
Margaret was part of the W.L.H.S. Alumni Committee for many years, doing whatever needed to be done. Banquets, meetings, planning and participating in parades for several years dressed as a Clown delighting young and old handing out candy and toys. She has been part of the Mascoma Senior Center since 1997 as a worker and volunteer. Cooking, delivering meals on wheels, setting the tables, whatever needed to be done Margaret could be counted on to get it done. Being part of the Senior Center was her pride and joy. Margaret also worked at DHMC Birthing Center, Shopping International, Dartmouth Skiway, Putnams Drug Store and Pompanoosuc Mills.
Margaret also loved to travel, whenever there was a bus trip you could bet she was on it. Anywhere from Fenway Park, New York City, Nashville, Niagara Falls, Toronto and a Cruise to the Eastern Caribbean with two of her children. Her favorite being the Coast of Maine. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. She was a Dartmouth Hockey season ticket holder for many years.
She is survived by her four children; Bruce A. of Walpole, NH, Wayne H. of Enfield, NH, Brian F. of New Mexico and Wendy S. (Karl) McCullough of Tunbridge, VT. Four grandchildren; Dawn, Jason, Kaleb and Dulcie. Fourteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. A brother Harry P. (Claudette) Leonard of Wiscasset, ME. Friends and caregivers; Annette and Gary Hutchins of Enfield, NH. Also many family and friends.
Margaret was predeceased by her Husband (2011), Father (1947), Mother (1993), her Stepfather from age 13 Lawrence Merritt (1997) and Brother Forrest Leonard (1991).
Margaret’s wishes were that there will be no funeral service. A graveside service will be held at a later date when her family and friends can travel and be together safely.
