HARTFORD — Fire officials believe a maple sugaring operation in a Dothan Road garage is to blame for a two-alarm fire that destroyed the garage and damaged the nearby home Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to 985 Dothan Road at about 5:30 p.m. to find the two-car garage “fully involved with fire extending into the main house, located approximately 10 feet away from the garage,” according to a news release from the Hartford Fire Department.

The main fire was extinguished within about 10 minutes, with limited damage to the main house, and the homeowners were able to return home. The garage and a vehicle inside were destroyed.

“The cause appears to be related to a maple sugaring operation that was occurring in the garage at the time of the fire and appears to be accidental,” fire officials said in the release. Nine fire departments responded.

Property records list Toby and Jennifer Kravitz as owners at 985 Dothan Road.
