NEWRY, Maine — Two competitors from the Whaleback Core Team recorded top-10 finishes at the Tri-States freestyle skiing championship held at Sunday River on Feb. 29 and March 1.
Grantham’s Zac Gaudet took third place in the boys aerials with Norwich-based teammate Connor Reed sixth. Reed also had a team-best 32nd place in the boys moguls, with Enfield’s Austin Irwin (55th) and Enfield’s Kane Bergeron (59th) also taking part.
Norwich’s Ryan Reed finished 26th in the girls moguls for Whaleback at Tri-States.
The Reeds, Gaudet, Irwin, Bergeron and two other Whaleback teammates — Dani Carriere and Logan Isham, both of Enfield — were scheduled to compete in the Eastern States Young Guns Junior Nationals freestyle championship at Bristol (N.Y.) Mountain this weekend.
PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. — Two-skier tandems from the Ford Sayre Ski Council swept all three girls relays races at the Bill Koch League festival cross country ski races held at the Great Glen Trails on Feb. 29 and March 1.
Representing central Vermont, FSSC’s Lucille Dent and Ingrid Groff won the girls grades 3-4 race, Annie Hanna and Reese Kenney combined to take grades 5-6, and Sarah Glueck and Wyethe Murray won the grades 7-8 division. Ford Sayre also got a runner-up among grades 1-2 from Miles Brooks and Hans Hilton, with Wendell Durham and Tomas Masterson taking third in the boys grades 5-6 event.
Several Ford Sayre athletes kept up their successful ways in individual competition. Glueck won the girls 7-8 race (12 minutes, 7.1 seconds), Hanna took grades 5-6 (9:50.7), and Dent and Groff were 2-3 in the girls grades 3-4 race in 8:25.5 and 8:43.5, respectively.
THETFORD — Early-bird registration for May’s Color Splash 5K at Thetford Academy has been extended to March 27.
The 5-kilometer run and walk is scheduled for May 17 on the academy’s Woods Trail. Registration is $25 through March 27, increasing to $35 after that. Proceeds from the race benefits community members in crisis and those with no ability to pay for case at the Clara Martin Center.

NORWICH — The Upper Valley Trails Alliance has made several changes to its Passport to Winter Fun program as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The UVTA encourages participants in the program to continue remaining physically active outdoors. As for taking advantage of incentive prizes for participating, all should check business websites or call before cashing in rewards.

NORWICH — The Upper Valley Trails Alliance will again offer its High School Trail Corps program this summer.
The program is open to boys and girls in grades 8-12 seeking to spend time in the outdoors learning about trail maintenance, building technique and trail stewardship. Participants join UVTA staff and are paid for a week as they work on trail projects around the region.
