WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The fourth-seeded Hartford High boys hockey team broke open a tight game with three third-period goals en route to a 5-0 shutout of No. 13 U-32 at Wendell A. Barwood Arena on Saturday in a VPA Division II first-round game.
The Hurricanes (14-6-1) scored in the first stanza on an unassisted goal by James McReynolds and added another in the second by A.J. DeBois, assisted by Ozzie DeFelice.
“I think in the third we imposed our will on them,” Hartford coach Todd Bebeau said. “(The Raiders) were in the game up until the third.”
Kyle Hamilton had a pair of goals, the first assisted by Bentley Boonyaharn and the second by Simon Spaulding, in Hartford’s third-period eruption. The fourth goal was scored by Kaj Boeri, with an assist from Boonyaharn.
“I think Kyle Hamilton and Bentley really stepped up for us,” Bebeau said. “They were our spark.”
Goalies Colby Boyce and Sean Kelliher combined for 13 saves for Hartford, which had 29 shots on goal.
The Hurricanes will host No. 5 Lyndon in a D-II quarterfinal at Barwood Arena on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Hartford beat Lyndon, 2-1, on the final day of the regular season, a victory that guaranteed Tuesday’s home encounter.
WEST LEBANON — With a 55-8 advantage in shots on goal, the Marauders overwhelmed Bishop Brady at Campion Rink.
Carter Auch had a pair of goals and an assist in the win for Hanover (12-9-0 overall, 10-8-0 league).
The Marauders scored in the first on Jack Stadheim’s goal, with assists from Spencer Lawe and Pat Daley.
After Bishop Brady tied it, Auch scored his first goal in the second period with assists from Casey Graham and Archer Judd.
Hanover scored four more in the third, including a shorthanded, unassisted goal by Rowan Wilson that made the score 3-1. Graham, Auch and Curtis Rice finished the scoring.
Hanover learn its first-round assignment in the NHIAA Division I tournament on Monday. Hanover coach Dick Dodds said he knows the Marauders’ opener will be home.
MERIDEN — A shorthanded goal by Sullivan Mack with five minutes to play lifted Kimball Union over New Hampton.
The Wildcats got out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from Nic Bernardo and Grant Eastwood and went up 3-0 lead in the second when Tomas Mazura scored on the power play. New Hampton scored twice to cut the margin to one before Mack’s shorthanded goal made it 4-2.
New Hampton got back within one before an empty-net goal by Paul Dore sealed the win for the Wildcats. Goalie Veeti Kohvakka had 38 saves.
KUA (26-7-2) opens the NEPSAC on the road on Wednesday against Salisbury in a quarterfinal rematch of last year’s NEPSAC Elite Eight championship game.
STOWE, Vt. — The 10th-seeded Hurricanes played some of their best hockey all year but came up short in the first round of the VPA Division II tournament.
Brianna Roberts scored a hat trick with her third goal coming with 54 seconds left in regulation after Hartford pulled its goalie for an extra skater.
“We just couldn’t get the last one,” Hartford coach Bill Goldsworthy said. “We dominated the last 50 seconds but had absolutely no puck luck.”
Goldsworthy said his team was flat in the second period when Stowe went up, 4-2, but the third stanza was the best they played all year.
Nora Knudsen, Izzy Stack, Greer McCarty and Caitlin Slider assisted on Roberts’ goals.
Hartford was outshot, 38-15.
Hartford (1-20-0) graduates Jacqueline Gour, Anna Coutermarsh, Anna Moore and captain Greer McCarty and Ceci Spaulding.
MERIDEN — The Wildcats came back from an 18-point deficit with a 25-6 run to win by one in the closing seconds.
Kimball Union was up by one at halftime, 41-40, before Winchendon went on a 12-0 run midway through the second to build their lead.
Rob Brown scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the second half for KUA. Andrew Hartel had 18 points, and Rob McRae 16. The Wildcats finish the season at 14-5 in NEPSAC Class AA and 20-7 overall. Tournament pairings come out Sunday.
BOSTON — Thetford Academy’s Grace Davis posted a 10th-place finish in the girls high jump to highlight Upper Valley participation in the New England Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday.
Davis recorded a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches for her result. A senior, Davis is heading to Quinnipiac University in the fall to join the track and field team.
Thetford’s Tad Darrah was 25th and Hartford’s Aaron Mitchell 26th in the boys 600-meter run.
Hanover’s Zoe Onyanto claimed 21st in the girls 300, with Hartford’s Reilly Slusser 24th, Hanover’s Ella Maclean 27th and Hartford’s Kennedy Mullen 28th. Mullen was also 24th in the girls long jump. Hanover’s Maliya Sinclair landed in 22nd place in the shot put. Hartford’s Eleanor Hinckley added a 22nd-place result in the 55 dash.
The Hanover boys were 20th in the 4×800 meter relay with Matt Bonner, Ian Nolon, Trevor Siegel and Daniel Bandler recording a time of 8:34.79 in the field of 29 teams.

MERIDEN — The visitors netted the game-winning goal on a power play with less than two minutes to go to beat the Wildcats (25-7-2).
Sullivan Mack scored his 40th goal of the season for Kimball Union in the opening period, then added his 41st to tie the game at 2-2 in the third. Zak Brice stopped 30 shots in the KUA net.
MENDON, Vt. — The Woodstock girls were first and the boys second at the one-day-delayed Southern District championship at Pico.
The Wasps’ Abi Masillo won the two-run giant slalom in 1 minutes, 25.08 seconds, with Taylor Blodorn third, Maggie Parker fifth and Alice Sperber sixth. Sperber topped the Woodstock results in the slalom, leading a 4-5 finish with Parker in 1:22.63.
The Woodstock boys were 2-4-9-10 in the slalom behind Aaron Wilson (1:11.19), Carl Gebhardt, Max Hambsch and Riley Quicker. Wilson (1:20.76) and Gebhardt were 4-5 in the GS.
Hartford’s Axel Heupler was 11th in the GS and 12th in the slalom to qualify for states. Thetford’s Elizabeth Dixon took 18th in the girls GS and 13th in the slalom. Jack Hastings led the Panther boys with a 14th-place GS result and a 13th in the slalom.
The VPA giant slalom meet is Monday at Killington, with the slalom meet on Tuesday at Suicide Six.
