HOLLIS, N.H. — Despite losing a 19-point fourth quarter lead, the Hanover High girls basketball team survived on the road Monday night at Hollis-Brookline (15-2), beating the second-place Cavaliers, 62-60.

“It was a gritty road win,” Marauders coach Dan O’Rourke said. “We needed this sort of game. We needed a tough road game where things weren’t going well. Not playing our best basketball of the year, but still in it.”

Hanover (17-2, 16-0 NHIAA) carried a 17-point lead entering the final quarter, but missed shots and fouls allowed the Cavaliers to cut the lead. The hosts outscored Hanover 32-17 in the fourth quarter.

The Marauders were able to win the game, however, by shooting 27 of 37 from the free-throw line. Maddie McCorkle scored a team-high 19 points and Stella Galanes added 16 points.

The Marauders take the season series with Hollis-Brookline thanks to their 67-43 victory on Feb. 14.

Hanover turns around and hosts ConVal on Tuesday night.

Burr & Burton 57, Woodstock 23

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps were led by Emma Tarleton’s 10 points, but couldn’t overcome visiting Burr & Burton (13-6).

Savannah Sheehan had five points for Woodstock (1-15), which hosts Hartford on Tuesday night.

Windsor 69, Mill River 19

CLARENDON, Vt. — The Yellowjackets close out the regular season on Friday night when they host Springfield for senior night.

Lake Region 50, Thetford 44

ORLEANS, Vt. – Entering the fourth quarter trailing nine points, the Panthers tried to rally but couldn’t overcome the deficit as their five-game winning streak came to an end.

Casey MacVeagh and Grace Davis each had 10 points for Thetford (16-3). The teams were tied at 9-9 after one quarter of play, but Lake Region (17-2) carried a 27-21 lead at the break.

The Panthers host U-32 on Friday night to wrap up the regular season.

Oxbow 47, Montpelier 32

BRADFORD, Vt. — The Olympians pulled away in the fourth quarter, thanks to outscoring the visitors 15-4. Arianna Bolles scored eight of her 10 points in the frame. 

Emma Parkin led the way for Oxbow (14-5) with 18 points. Melanie Neil also had seven points. 

The O’s visit Randolph on Thursday. 

 

NORDIC SKIINGBassette places third

JERICHO, Vt. — Woodstock’s Justice Bassette placed third in the 5K freestyle race at the Division II Vermont state championship at the Ethan Allan Range.

Bassette finished with a time of 13:52.2, only 12 seconds off from first-place finisher Jed Kurts of U-32.

 

ALPINE SKIINGWoodstock sweeps meet

PERU, Vt. — Despite warm weather and soft snow, the Woodstock boys and girls teams won the single-course meet at Bromley Mountain 

The Wasps’ girls claimed the first three spots. Abi Masillo was in first, beating out teammate Taylor Blodorn by 0.72 seconds and Alice Sperber by 2.27 seconds.

For the Woodstock boys team, Riley Quicker took first place and was followed by Stephen Bianchi (fourth), Orion Beardsley (ninth) and Max Hambsch (12th).

Axel Huepler led Hartford with an fifth-place finish. Ian O’Brien came in behind at eighth. 

Boys team score: Woodstock 27, Burr & Burton 27, Hartford 47, MSJ 51

Girls team score: Woodstock 16, Burr & Burton 22

 

BOYS BASKETBALLStevens 57, Newport 24

NEWPORT — The Cardinals outscored Newport 34-15 in the first half.

Stevens (3-11) was led by Owen Taylor’s 12 points and Cooper Moote’s 10 points. They host Kearsarge on Tuesday night.

Will Cross had five points for the Division III Tigers (2-17, 1-15 NHIAA), who host Mascoma on Tuesday night.

 

BOYS HOCKEYHanover 3, Trinity 2

MANCHESTER, N.H – The Marauders barrage of goals proved to be too much for Trinity. Hanover scored all three of their goals in the second period of play at St. Anselm’s Sullivan Arena. 

Spencer Lawe opened the scoring on assists from Patrick Daley and Jack Stadheim. The next was from Carter Auch on a Auggie Oberting pass. 

The final blow from Hanover (11-8, 9-7 NHIAA) in the period was a Curtis Rice tally thanks to Tono Correa and Rowan Wilson. 

Goaltender Luke Ives notched 22 saves for the Marauders, who return to Campion Rink on Wednesday 

 

BASEBALLDartmouth players named Ivy Player, Pitcher of the Week

HANOVER — Ubaldo Lopez and Justin Murray were named player and pitcher of the week, respectively, by the Ivy League in the first weekly awards of the 2020 season.

Lopez was the Big Green’s designated hitter last weekend and in four games hit .385 with three doubles, three runs and two RBIs to help Dartmouth start the season with a 2-2 record.

Murray, a right-hander, last seven shutout innings on Sunday as Dartmouth defeated Omaha, 8-1. He allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while matching a career-high with six strikeouts.

In the first three games of the weekend, he played in the infield and hit .273 with two doubles and two walks.

The Big Green start a three-game weekend series at Virginia on Friday.

 

WOMEN’S LACROSSEBourque named Player of the Week

HANOVER — After leading the Big Green to a home-opening 16-8 victory over Boston University on Saturday, Katie Bourque was named Ivy League offensive player of the week.

The senior captain scored a career-high five goals in the win to go along with two assists. She added two ground balls and three caused turnovers.

No. 15 Dartmouth (2-0) opens Ivy League play on Saturday at Brown.

 

SOFTBALLPlonka picked Pitcher of the Week

HANOVER — Dartmouth’s Brooke Plonka was named the Ivy League pitcher of the week thanks to a weekend that saw her throw 16.1 innings with 25 strikeouts and posting a 1.29 ERA.

In her first start of the season Saturday, she tallied 14 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.

The Big Green (3-2) head to The Spring Games in Lakeland, Fla., and play Florida International and Albany on Friday.

 

MEN’S GOLFDartmouth tied for 16th

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Big Green sit in a tie for 16th place with Ivy League foe Cornell after the first two rounds of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at the 6,913-yard, par-72 Wexford Plantation Golf Course.

Eli Thrasher had the best round for the Big Green to start the day with a 2-over 74 thanks to three birdies — one on each of his first two holes (15 and 16 with the shotgun start) and another on the 14th to end his round.

Will Bednarz produced the low score over the second 18 with four birdies as he carded a 3-over 75.

The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning.

WOMEN’S TENNISMichigan State 4, Dartmouth 2

HANOVER — The Big Green picked up two singles wins, but couldn’t overcome the Spartans at the Boss Tennis Center.

Catherine Cable got Dartmouth (5-5) on the board with a three-set win over at the No. 4 position, while Racquel Lyn had a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory against Samantha Memije on court two to make it a 3-2 match.

The Big Green visit Boston University on Saturday.
