PELHAM, N.H. — A trio of Newport High state champions headlined the NHIAA Division III state wrestling tournament at Pelham High on Saturday.
The Tigers’ Josh Sharron, younger brother of coach Zakk Sharron, won the state title at 138 pounds. The younger Sharron went 3-0 with three pins. Anson Ritondo repeated the feat at 106 pounds, going 3-0 with three pins of his own to win the state title.
Marius Edwards added a win at 160 pounds in perhaps the match of the day. Edwards was trailing, 5-1, before pulling off a 5-point move in the final 10 seconds to win, 6-5. Newport’s Mike Wilkinson added a fourth place finish at 145 pounds.
“It was great, the guys were excited. It’s great to see three championships,” coach Sharron said.
Mascoma came up just short, three times, from claiming a state title. Cam Stebbins (126 pounds), Dylan Pelton (170) and Raven Streeter (285) all finished in second in their weight classes. The Royals also had Bryan Lowell (132) in third and Tyler Mekus (152) and Caleb Hobbs (220) in fourth.
Lebanon’s David Carvalho took second at 152 pounds.
Plymouth won the team state title, followed in second by Bow. Mascoma claimed fifth and Newport took sixth. Lebanon was 11th. All top-three finishers will move on to compete in the Meet of Champions on Saturday at Nashua High School South.
