MONTPELIER — Vermont Gov. Phil Scott says he is backing a Republican challenger to President Donald Trump in Vermont’s March 3 presidential primary.
Scott told reporters at his weekly news conference at the Statehouse on Thursday that he plans to back former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld in the primary.
“I’ve met with him before and think a lot of him and his platform, so I would be supporting him,” Scott said.
Scott, who is up for re-election and faces a primary challenge, had earlier said he supported the House impeachment inquiry and that he believed Trump had “abused” his office.
Scott first met with Weld and watched him speak at a candidate forum in White River Junction in May co-sponsored by VtDigger and the Valley News.
Trump won 85.6% of the vote in last week’s New Hampshire Republican primary, while Weld took 9.1%.
