NEWPORT — Brent Wilmot, the deputy chief of the Claremont Police Department, has been selected as the new chief for Newport.
Wilmot, who grew up in Claremont and whose father, Bill, worked for Claremont police, replaces Jim Burroughs. Burroughs is retiring.
Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase confirmed in a phone interview Saturday that Wilmot had accepted the job and likely will start at the beginning of March.
“It is a big loss for us,” Chase said about Wilmot’s departure. “I’m happy for him but sad for us.”
Wilmot has been with Claremont for 15 years and before that was an officer in Campton, N.H.
