NEWPORT — An 80-year-old Newport man was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a vehicle while he was walking across North Main Street, police said.
Carlton R. Barton had just left Yoshi’s Convenience Store shortly before 7:25 p.m. when he was hit in the roadway, according to a news release from the Newport Police Department.
He sustained serious injuries and was transported from the scene by the Newport Ambulance Service to Valley Regional Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police said.
Police determined Jamie L. Fordiani, 33, was driving a 2008 Ford Escape northbound when her vehicle collided with Barton.
Police said Barton was not using a crosswalk, and “neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the collision.”
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash should call Newport Police Lt. Craig Robertson at 603-863-3232.
