WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The sixth annual Philippe Bouthillier boys hockey tournament ended in bedlam Saturday at Barwood Arena. Host Hartford High and Vermont Division II rival Woodstock played three scoreless periods followed by overtime. A five-round shootout ensued, then two rounds of a sudden-death shootout.

Hurricanes senior captain Kyle Hamilton scored the deciding goal, putting his team over the top by firing the puck through the legs of Woodstock goaltender Henry Greene. Hartford, which lost at Woodstock, 3-0, earlier this season, received five shootout saves from freshman goaltender Colby Boyce.

“He’s been everything we could have hoped for,” Bebeau said of Boyce, who is the program’s only netminder. “He and Greene were the best players on the ice. Woodstock had the better chances in overtime but Colby was phenomenal.”

Said Woodstock coach Jon Chamberlain: “Back-and-forth the whole way with two great teams. It was the best high school game I’ve been involved in.”

Bebeau called the contest “an instant classic” and noted that while it wasn’t pretty hockey, it was of playoff intensity, requiring dump-and-chase offense, gritty defense and numerous blocked shots. Woodstock is the two-time defending state champion. The result goes down as a tie on both teams’ records.

“This place was just crazy tonight,” Bebeau said of the Hurricanes’ refurbished home. “It was a battle of attrition and a great atmosphere for local hockey.”

The all-tournament team was comprised of goaltender Boyce, Woodstock defensemen Charles Greene and Riley Shepherd and forwards Hamilton, Jon Cloud of Lebanon and Burr & Burton’s Duncan Chamberlain. Hartford (4-1-1) hosts St. Johnsbury next Saturday. Woodstock (4-1-1) hosts Brattleboro the same day.

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION – The Raiders surrendered five consecutive goals during the Bouthillier tournament consolation game’s final 18 minutes.

“Our defensive-zone coverage is pretty bad,” said Lebanon coach Jim Damren, whose 1-4 team visits Kingswood on Jan. 8. “At one point, two (Burr & Burton) guys were in front of our net, our two defensemen were in one corner and our center was I don’t know where.

“It’s got to be a five-man effort with the forwards being disciplined and helping the defensemen out. Right now, we’re getting exposed.”

Jon Cloud scored off an Andrew Duany pass midway through the first period and Duany struck with an assist to Luke Greene six minutes into the middle stanza. The Bulldogs (3-3) pulled within 2-1 four minutes before the second intermission, then scored a shorthanded goal 14 seconds before the break for a 2-2 deadlock.

Lebanon allowed a goal off the rush 1:25 into the third period and its comeback chances immediately took a hit when it was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after a player smashed his stick on the boards. Burr & Burton scored with six and four minutes remaining during a chippy game that saw Bulldog Mark Carthy issued an automatic game misconduct for committing five penalties.
