FALUN, Sweden — West Fairlee’s Tara Geraghty-Moats opened the FIS women’s Nordic combined season on Saturday the same she spent it most of last winter: on top of a podium.
Geraghty-Moats, 26, used her superiority on skis to make up distance on the ski jump ramp during Saturday’s win in Sweden. Seventh after the jumping portion, Geraghty-Moats outdistanced the cross country skiing field by nearly two minutes to claim the victory.
Geraghty-Moats beat out a field of 27 women jumpers, 13 of whom later competed in the cross country ski race. She went 77 meters on her jump attempt and scored 83.5 points to trail leader Thea Minyan Bjorseth by 15.5 points heading to the cross country course. Geraghty-Moats’ time of 14 minutes, 53 seconds made up the points gap and then some, relegating Bjorseth (17:36) to third place overall.
The next scheduled FIS women’s Nordic combined is a three-day Continental Cup meeting at Utah Olympic Park on Dec. 13-15.
