BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Dartmouth College men’s basketball team came out of the gate hot, scoring the first five points and never trailing in a season-opening 68-63 win over Buffalo on Friday night, ending the Bulls’ 26-game winning streak at Alumni Arena.
Trevon Ary-Turner converted a three-point play three minutes into the contest, and Taurus Samuels sank a jumper a half-minute later for a 5-0 lead. Dartmouth (1-0) spent the rest of the half gradually stretching its advantage to as many as 14 points on the Bulls (0-1), settling for a 33-26 halftime lead.
Buffalo trailed, 47-30, with 12:47 to play when it gave Dartmouth a late scare. Capped by a Ronald Segu basket, the Bulls reeled off 12 straight points in the span of 2½ minutes to get within five points at 47-42. The hosts eventually cut the gap to a single point, 56-55, with 6:03 to go but never caught up. Samuels had a basket and four free throws late to clinch the win, scoring a career-high 16 points on the night.
Chris Knight paced Dartmouth with 18 points, adding 11 rebounds for a double-double. Aaryn Rai contributed 12 points for the Big Green, which hosts Florida Gulf Coast on Monday night.
HANOVER — The Big Green (0-2-1, 0-1-1) gave up a one-goal lead and rallied from a goal down to earn an ECAC Hockey tie with the Bobcats (4-3-1, 0-0-1) at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth’s Daniel Warpecha traded first-period markers with Q-pac’s Nick Jermain. The visitors took a 2-1 lead on Ethan Leyh’s midgame strike, but the Big Green forced overtime on a Tyler Campbell conversion midway through the third period.
Adrian Clark stopped 27 shots. Dartmouth hosts Princeton on Saturday.
HAMDEN, Conn. — Hannah Humphreys turned aside 33 shots in the Big Green (1-3-1, 1-2-1) net to secure an ECAC Hockey draw with the Bobcats (4-4-2, 0-3-1).
Humphreys kept Dartmouth in the contest early, making 13 first-period saves. Only Alexa Hoskin’s goal got by her, and the Big Green’s Bailee Brekke leveled that by scoring on a Celine Pietraszek pass at 5:37 of the middle stanza.
Dartmouth heads to Princeton for a league contest on Saturday.
PRINCETON, N.J. — The Big Green (7-13, 2-8) sustained a road loss to the Tigers, 25-11, 25-20, 25-23.
Dartmouth trailed for much of the third set, using a 6-1 run to turn a 20-16 deficit into a 22-21 lead and give hope for a comeback. Princeton (13-6, 9-1) snuffed out the Big Green’s hopes, making use of a service error and an attack error to prevail.
Nicole Liddle, Grace Wiczek and Jael Campbell all had six kills for Dartmouth, which visits Penn on Saturday.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Dartmouth senior Charlie Broom won his consolation match at the ITA National Fall Championship on Thursday. Broom defeated Georgia Gwinnett’s Jose Dugo, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2, in singles play.
Broom and classmate David Horneffer also competed in doubles, losing a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Michigan’s Andrew Fenty and Kristofer Simmar.
