NEWBURY, Vt. — Vermont authorities had to kill a wandering pig Thursday morning after it threatened to interfere with traffic on Interstate 91 near the Exit 17 interchange.

Vermont State Police said they received numerous reports about the pig, which weighed at least 500 pounds, on the interstate in Newbury. When state police, Vermont Fish and Wildlife, and other officials arrived, they found that the pig had traveled into a triangular grassy area near the Exit 17 off-ramp along the southbound interstate and Route 302, according to a state police news release.

The pig started to walk back toward the interstate, and troopers determined that it posed a traffic hazard, so a Fish and Wildlife officer shot the pig, police said.

The owner of the pig arrived soon after, and agreed to donate the pig to a butcher who processes meat for a local game supper in Bradford, Vt., the release said.
