WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Hartford police are continuing to investigate a theft of a “significant amount of cash” from the Welcome Center near the Amtrak train station overnight between Sept. 7 and 8.

Hartford Police Chief Phil Kasten said a person or multiple people entered the Welcome Center through an open office window and “ransacked” desks, taking the cash. He declined to disclose the exact amount of money that was stolen to protect the integrity of the investigation Anyone with information about the ongoing situation is asked to call Officer Mitch Cable at 802-295-9425Kasten wished to remind residents to close windows and doors and secure them at the end of each day.

“One-third of every crime is the opportunity to commit it,” Kasten said. “If we can take that away, we can prevent a crime.”
