LEBANON — Stevens High’s Brianna Frisbee converted a breakaway low and inside the left post Monday during the 11th minute of the Cardinals’ NHIAA Division III game with Lebanon. It was all the offense the Cardinals would need during a 2-0 victory.
Frisbee also factored in the second goal, blasting a 22nd minute shot off Raiders goaltender Autumn Crowell, the rebound of which was knocked in at the right post by Abbie Thurber. Stevens, which didn’t take a penalty corner during the game, rebounded after suffering a 4-1 loss to Newport during its season opener last week.
“We learned from our mistakes and moved on,” said 16th-year Stevens coach Patty Deschaine, whose team was 6-7-2 and lost to Lebanon in double overtime during the first round of the 2018 playoffs. “We worked on the basics and on marking (Lebanon) and not ball-watching in front of our goal.”
Nicole Salls made five saves for Stevens and Crowell made one for Lebanon, which held a 5-3 shot advantage. The majority of the game took place outside the arcs, the hosts spending more time in their opponents’ end but creating nothing tangible to show for it.
“The positive is that we generated scoring chances,” said third-year Lebanon coach Amanda Valliere, whose team was 11-4-2 and reached the state semifinals last year. “The bad is that we didn’t capitalize on them. Ball movement has usually been a strong suit for us, but today there was something lackluster and we were a half second slow or behind.”
Frisbee, who’s only a sophomore, stood out dramatically during the contest, running harder than anyone else, contesting loose balls with intensity and showing a willingness to drive directly to the goal once she gained possession.
“She’s got really good stick skills and a high motor and she can take the ball down the field,” Deschaine said. “We just need to get other people down there with her.”
Valliere praised center midfielder Lena Nowell and left midfielder Izzy Fabry for cutting off passes and quickly pushing the ball back up the field. Graduation losses hit the Raiders primarily on defense and the coach said more attention will have to be paid there during practice. She added that Crowell has looked strong in replacing graduated senior Hope Brown in net.
Stevens (1-1) hosts ConVal (1-1) on Thursday. Lebanon (2-1) is at Kearsarge (1-1) on Friday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes (4-0) continued their assault on the Southern Vermont League behind a pair of Alice Piper goals.
Kennedy Mullen, Emi Harlow, Daisy Phelps and Maliya Sinclair also tallied for the Hurricanes, who have outscored their foes, 18-1, to open the season.
Zoe Pfeiffer had a pair of assists and Sinclair, Mullen and Greer McCarty each had one.
Bailey Cameron needed just one save for her third shutout of the season. Hartford visits Rutland on Wednesday.
WOODSTOCK — Tom Bissaillon notched a hat trick, scoring during the 24th, 38th and 55th minutes.
Harrison Morse also tallied and Taylor Plourde had two assists and Rowan Smail had one.
Stephen Bianchi made two saves for the Wasps (2-2), who played their third game in five days and who visit Fair Haven on Thursday night.
CONCORD — Lebanon scorers were junior Charlie Cloud (12 points), Roy Shapard (12), Nathan Stark (14) and Zach Bitler (16).
Only the latter was on the Raiders varsity last season, leaving coach Chris Pollard with an inexperienced squad on the par-36 front nine at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.
“We’re a young team but we’re growing and improving our scores,” said Pollard, whose team took to the course competitively for the third time this fall and which hosts Bow, Belmont and Gilford on Wednesday at the Eastman Golf Links.
Team scores: Bishop Brady 68, Stevens 59, Lebanon 54, ConVal 38.
NORTH SUTTON — The Raiders failed to score for the third time in four outings and dropped to 1-2-1.
Next up for Lebanon is a home game against Coe-Brown on Wednesday.
