Women from Rhode Islandrescued from top of Cardigan

First responders have had a busy holiday weekend dealing with reports of distressed and lost hikers in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Officials say two Rhode Island women became sick and dehydrated Sunday evening near the summit of Mount Cardigan in Alexandria. Rescuers from Canaan Fire and Rescue and Enfield Fire reached the pair at 9:25 p.m. and helped them down the mountain in the dark.

Also on Sunday, a 35-year-old man from Massachusetts became lost on Mount Moosilauke in Benton, but was located thanks to coordinates from a 911 call he made.

First responders also helped a Massachusetts woman who had to be carried out after suffering a lower leg injury while hiking down Mount Lafayette in Franconia.

Two injured when race car hurtles over wall in Barre, Vt.

BARRE, Vt. — Vermont officials say two people were hurt when a race car hurtled over a retaining wall during a weekend qualifying race at Thunder Road.

Fans described a scary scene Sunday during the qualifying event for the 41st Labor Day Classic stock car race in Barre.

A witness told The Times Argus that one of the victims was knocked into the wall and the other was pinned under the car. Madison Urie told WCAX-TV it was “the worst thing I’ve seen in my entire life.”

Officials say both of the injured were track officials, one from Thunder Road and another from the American-Canadian tour. Officials said in a statement that both suffered leg injuries. A medical helicopter transports one of the victims. Track officials postponed further racing after the crash.

Vermont inmate dies at facility in Mississippi

WATERBURY, Vt. — The Vermont Department of Corrections says a 39-year-old inmate has died in a Mississippi prison facility owned and operated by CoreCivic.

Officials said Monday that Christopher Chase died of an apparent suicide in his cell at the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility.

Chase was serving a sentence of 20 years to life after pleading guilty to second degree murder in his girlfriend’s killing in Vermont.
