WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hartford High football team earned its first win of the season 24 hours early and without taking the field.

Rice Memorial, the Hurricanes’ Friday night opponent, forfeited the contest on Thursday because of low roster numbers. The Green Knights were a top-four team in VPA Division I last fall; they had more than two dozen players ready for the start of the season but lost nearly a third to injuries in the past week.

The teams will still hold a controlled scrimmage at Hartford High on Friday night starting at 7 p.m. Hartford athletic director Jeff Moreno said the school intends to go forward with plans to honor former AD Brian Trottier as part of the evening.

The forfeit means Hartford’s first meaningful contest will now be a Sept. 7 visit to Burr & Burton.
