Physician assistants given OK to prescribe medical marijuana

CONCORD — Physician assistants soon will be able to prescribe medical marijuana in New Hampshire.

Republican Gov. Chris Sununu on Friday signed a bill expanding the list of providers who may prescribe the drug. Another bill that would allow medical marijuana users to grow their own plants awaits his signature.

The state won’t be legalizing recreational use of marijuana any time soon, however. The House passed a bill legalizing recreational use in April, but the Senate later voted to delay action on it.

Mountain train helps rescue injured amputee hiker

CONCORD — Rescuers say they used a mountain train that was in the midst of an anniversary celebration to rescue a hiker who injured his back on Mt. Washington.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said 46-year-old Michael Couch of Atlanta, Ind., was hurt and not able to continue while hiking the mountain on Saturday. Couch is an amputee who was hiking to the summit to raise money for his foundation, Lost Limbs Foundation.

Fish and Game requested help from Mount Washington Cog Railway, which provides mountain tours. The railway was holding its 150th anniversary celebration at the time. Fish and Game said the railway found an engineer and brakeman, and sent up a rescuer crew in less than an hour. Couch was brought down on the train.

Boaters, anglers asked to keep distance from loons

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and Loon Preservation Committee in New Hampshire are asking boaters and anglers to keep their distance from loons to protect the nesting birds.

Vermont state wildlife biologist Doug Morin said while loons were removed from the state’s endangered species list in 2005, one of their main threats is human disturbance during breeding season.

He said most areas where loons are nesting are surrounded by signs notifying people but not all nesting sites are marked.

The Loon Preservation Committee also puts out signs and sometimes row blinds around loon nests in New Hampshire.
