SOUTH ROYALTON — A Washington-based faculty advocacy group over the weekend voted to add Vermont Law School to its “sanctioned institutions” list, saying the South Royalton-based law school departed from “standards of academic governance” in a faculty restructuring last year.
The American Association of University Professors took the action at its annual meeting. A report for the group issued earlier this spring faulted VLS for revoking the tenure of 14 of its 19 tenured professors in a budget move last year.
VLS said it was “disappointed” by the AAUP decision and its process.
“It is important to remember that the AAUP is an advocacy organization and is not involved in the accreditation of Vermont Law School. VLS nevertheless continues to abide by the AAUP’s stated principles of shared faculty governance and academic freedom,” VLS said in a statement on its website.
