LEBANON, NH — Rena J. Smith of Lebanon died on May 28th, 2019 from Pneumonia complications. She was born on 8 January, 1934 in Indianapolis, Indiana the daughter of Charles and Ethyl Pointer. She spent her childhood in Williamsport, Indiana. She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1952. She briefly attended Purdue University, but was forced to withdraw for monetary reasons. She took a position as a secretary in the Department of Agronomy at Purdue. In 1955 she met her husband to be Roger P. Smith who was a doctoral candidate at Purdue. The couple were married in Warren, Indiana on 1 November, 1956, and resided briefly in Evansville, Indiana. In 1957, Roger was commissioned into the US Army Reserves and assigned orders overseas at the Landstuhl Army Medical Center, Landstuhl Germany. While stationed in Germany, Rena took several courses in sewing and tailoring and became a very skilled seamstress outfitting her family with attractive clothing. In 1960, the couple moved to Hanover, NH when Roger was appointed to the faculty of the Dartmouth Medical School. Rena was deeply involved in the affairs of their three children, Sam F. Smith, formally of Cornish, NH, Joan B. Poitras and spouse William Scott Poitras, and Ben H. Smith and his wife Hitomi Smith of Scott Depot, WV. Rena deeply loved her three grandchildren. Rena loved flowers and was extremely fond of chocolate. She loved being a member of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College and serving it’s ministry in the most humble ways. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 8, 2019 at 10am at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.
