CLAREMONT — The Planning Board has scheduled a site visit to the proposed location of a rail transfer station for construction and demolition material.

American Recycling, which recycles several materials including metal, paper and cardboard at its Industrial Boulevard facility, had a preliminary review of its site plan by the board on Tuesday. It is seeking approval for a plan to receive construction and demolition debris that would be sorted to remove recyclables and then loaded onto rail cars for transport out of New England.

The Planning Board discussed the application for a couple hours and eventually decided to hold the site visit on Tuesday at 2 p.m. It is open to the public.

American Recycling proposes to demolish an existing building next to the rail siding down to the concrete slab then extend the slab on both ends. Trucks would dump loads on the concrete where large machines would do the sorting and loading on to the rail cars. The company’s owner said they are not sure at this point of how much volume they would be handling each day.

City Planner Scott Osgood said this the board wants to address several issues with the applicants including noise, dust and possible runoff when it rains because the concrete will not be covered. Further, American Recycling will need state permits from the Department of Environmental Services if local approval is obtained.

Correction: The site visit by the Claremont Planning Board to American Recycling on Industrial Boulevard is at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4. A previous version of this story gave the wrong time of the visit.
