HANOVER — Dartmouth College women’s lacrosse goalkeeper Kiera Vrindten has been named the Ivy League defensive player of the week for the second time this season.
The junior was the backbone of the Big Green’s come-from-behind 15-11 victory on Saturday at No. 9 Penn, stopping a season-high 14 shots to earn the win. Many of Vrindten’s seven second-half saves led to transition opportunities for Dartmouth, which turned some into goals to beat Penn for the first time in three seasons.
Vrindten was also named the conference’s top goalkeeper on April 1 after another 15-11 win, that one coming against Harvard. Last year’s Ivy League goalkeeper of the year is 3-1 in league games this season, while the team is atop the standings at 4-1.
The Big Green visits Vermont on Tuesday for its final nonconference game of the season.
HANOVER — Dartmouth freshman right-hander Justin Murray earned the Ivy League’s rookie of the week award on Monday for his performance in a win over Brown on Sunday.
Murray threw deep into Sunday’s 7-5 win over the Bears in Rhode Island, holding the hosts scoreless without a hit for the first 5⅔ innings and eventually going seven frames. Murray finished with three strikeouts while allowing four hits and two walks to get the victory. He’s the third Dartmouth freshman pitcher to pick up rookie recognition this season, joining Trystan Sarcone and Nathan Skinner.
Dartmouth hosts Middlebury for a nonleague game on Tuesday.
BOYS TENNIS
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Marauders ran their record to 4-0 with another shutout victory at the Maxfield Sports Complex.
Aidan Biglow, Evan Yang, Chris Lee, Trevor Siegel, Alec McDevitt and Kevin Pillsbury secured the Hanover win by sweeping singles. Alex Rockmore and Andrew Enelow combined for an 8-2 decision at second doubles before rain washed out the two remaining matches.
The Marauders return to Maxfield on Wednesday to entertain Derryfield.
MERIDEN — Kimball Union Academy senior Arlo Merritt and junior Tomas Mazura both made the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s final pre-draft rankings, which were released by the league on Monday.
Mazura, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound center from Sezemice, Czech Republic, was ranked 131st out of nearly 250 players ranked by the CSB. Merritt, a 6-3, 190-pound center from Halifax, Nova Scotia, was close behind at 144th. Both dropped slightly from their midseason rankings, when Mazura was 127th and Merritt 130th.
Both Wildcats were key cogs in the team’s third straight NEPSAC Elite Eight championship last month. KUA finished 30-5-2 with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Salisbury in the title game, one that saw both Mazura and Merritt score goals.
