HAMDEN, Conn. — Junior Alec Vaules threw five scoreless innings while the offense banged out 11 hits — three by senior Steffen Torgersen — as the Dartmouth College baseball team handed Quinnipiac a 9-2 defeat on Wednesday afternoon at QU Baseball Field.
Vaules (1-0), making just his second career start, picked up his first collegiate victory by surrendering two hits and a walk over his five frames, fanning four in the process.
Big Green freshman Trystan Sarcone put a zero on the board in the sixth, and senior Zac Bygum held the Bobcats (8-13) in check during his two-inning stint before they avoided the shutout with two runs in the ninth.
Sean Sullivan, Ubaldo Lopez and Ben Rice had two hits apiece for the Big Green (8-11).
Gabriel Romano (three innings, seven hits, four earned runs) took the loss for Quinnipiac.
Dartmouth (2-1 Ivy) travels to Columbia (6-11, 2-1 Ivy) for a three-game Ivy League series this weekend.
NEW LONDON — Colby-Sawyer (5-2, 4-2 GNAC) received four goals from four players in the final 10:35 of the game to earn a victory over Emmanuel (3-3, 2-1) in first meeting between the schools.
Sarah Morin and Brittany Ireland each scored four times for the Chargers. Ireland added two assists to move into sole possession of fourth all-time with 48. Teammates Briana Couture and junior Grace Vosburgh added two goals apiece.
HANOVER — Five members of the Big Green’s national championship squad have been named All-Americans by the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association.
The quintet — Idia Ihensekhien, Milla Anderson, Kat Ramage, Camille Johnson and Emily Henrich — all made the NIRA first team. The first-team honor is the third straight for Ramage; Anderson is making her second consecutive first-team appearance, and Ihensekhien moved up from the previous season’s honorable mention squad. Johnson and Henrich are first-time NIRA honorees.
All were key parts of Dartmouth’s run to its first NIRA national championship back in November.
The Big Green (9-1) beat Harvard, 19-14, at Scully-Fahey Field, with Johnson earning the game’s most valuable player award.
NEW LONDON — Colby-Sawyer sophomore Julia Lanctot has been selected as a National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III scholar of distinction.
Lanctot, who earlier this month was named to the NFHCA’s national academic squad, was one of 268 student-athletes in the nation to be recognized as a scholar of distinction. She is the second Charger to earn this accolade, following Jesse Murch in 2014.
The program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the current academic year.
