CONCORD, NH — The Hon. Mary C. Holmes

Mary Catherine Holmes, age 94 passed away December 30, 2018.

She was born in Bellows Falls, VT on July 15, 1924 the daughter of the late Edmond J. and Helen (Odell) Stapleton.

Raised in Pittsfield NH she graduated from Pittsfield HS in 1942. Her marriage to Robert E. Holmes brought her to Penacook where together they raised their family and owned Holmes Mobil.

Mary was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas- Margaret K. Desmond Court, Immaculate Conception Church Altar Society, established the library at the Immaculate Conception School, belonged to the Carmel Guild, Penacook Jr. Women’s Club and the Business & Prof. Women’s Club, Concord Contemporary Club (charter member, VP and President), VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Penacook- Concerned Citizens and Historical Society, Concord Library Board of Trustees and 40 yrs. as a Red Cross blood drive volunteer which was very important to her.

Mary served 8 terms in the NH House of Representatives representing Penacook Ward 1 of Concord. During her tenure she was appointed to Health & Human Services Committee as clerk and vice chairman, Joint Legislative Committee for Elderly Affairs, vice chair and chairman, NH and Federal Healthcare Task Force, Governors Blue Ribbon Commission on Healthcare for long term care, Governors commission for handicapped and Alzheimer’s placement and Gov. Shaheen’s advisory board for the NH Brain Injury/Spinal Cord Assoc. and the Merrimack County Executive Commission.

VP of NH Order of Women Legislators (OWLS), NE director of National Order of Women Legislators, NH delegate to the 1988 National GOP Convention.

Mary loved to travel and spend time at her summer home on Webster Lake.

She is survived by her children, Mary Jane Leathers, husband, Steven of Newburg, OR; Kathleen Willey, husband, Mark of Alton Bay, NH; Robert E Holmes Jr., wife, Kelly of Canaan, NH; Sheilah Colby, husband, G. Ray of Concord, NH and Patricia Gaudette of Franklin, NH; 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Her brother, Henry Stapleton of Gilmanton, NH; her sister, Pat Smith of Hackettstown, NJ; and her sister in law, Cecile Stapleton of Alton, NH.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Holmes who passed away in 1976; her grandson, Mark D. Willey II; granddaughter, Lisa Holmes; great grandson, Dominick Willey; and her brothers, Edmond J. Stapleton II, and John Stapleton.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, January 7 from 9:30 AM to 11:15 AM at the

Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main Street, Concord.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 7 at 12 NOON at Immaculate Conception Church, 9 Bonney Street, Penacook.

Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery Penacook.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
