Keene, n.h. — It took a road trip to a big college floor for new Newport High boys basketball coach Bill Page to get his first victory on Thursday.

The Tigers used a 29-point fourth quarter to edge Hinsdale, 72-70, on the opening day of the Scores Holiday Basketball Tournament at Keene State College. Newport (0-5 league, 1-5 overall) hit 13 of 14 free throws in the final stanza and J.T. Blaine scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the fourth to help the Tigers prevail.

Blaine stuck two of Newport’s six 3-pointers for the contest as well. Joey Ackerman followed with 14 points, and Cole McNamara contributed 10.

Chase Hamilton was particularly clutch at the charity stripe, going 6-for-6 in the fourth quarter to highlight his eight-point effort. Cody O’Brian finished with nine points for the Tigers, who shot 18-for-22 from the line as a team.

“We didn’t play great but well enough to win,” Page said. “J.T. Blaine played well. McNamara had his best game of the year.”

The victory sends Newport into a 4 p.m. White Division contest with Fall Mountain this afternoon.

ConVal 61, Mount Royal 25

Keene, n.h. — The NHIAA Division IV Knights came up short against the D-II Cougars in the opening game of the Keene State tournament.

Louis Larosiliere had six points to pace Mount Royal (0-4, 0-5). Philip Dahlberg, Brendan Moorehouse and Mateo Hoffman each chipped in five points. Andrew Normandin had a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Knights will play at 11:30 a.m. today against Wilton-Lyndeborough.

Murdock (Mass.) 85Sunapee 30

Keene, n.h. — Zach Belisle had a team-high 11 points, but the Lakers (4-0, 4-1) had no answer for the Winchendon, Mass.-based Blue Devils at the Keene State tournament.

Sunapee opens today’s schedule with a 10 a.m. date against Hinsdale.

Littleton 53, Mascoma 50

Hanover — The Royals ran out of gas in the fourth quarter to drop an opening-round game at Hanover High’s Connecticut River Shootout.

Mascoma went on a 19-8 run in the third to lead, 42-34, heading into the fourth. Littleton answered with 19 points in the final frame to steal the win.

“It was an interesting game. It’s one we could’ve and, we think, should’ve won. We just made a couple more mistakes than they did,” Mascoma coach Jim Barry said.

Littleton’s Danny Kubkowski crossed the 1,000-point barrier for his career and led the Crusaders with 17 points.

Connor Thompson had 15 points to pace the Royals. Dakota Decocq and Ben Schwarz each added eight points. The Royals will play Woodsville at 5:30 p.m. today in the CRS consolation contest.

Hanover 78, Woodsville 24

Hanover — The Marauders (4-0, 5-0) used full-court pressure for an early 9-0 lead and rolled the rest of the way to a victory on the opening night of the Connecticut River Shootout.

“Our full-court pressure really was challenging for them,” Hanover coach Tim Winslow said. “Charlie Adams started us off in the right direction, and Liam Collins was right there with us. They were the catalysts.”

Simon Roach had a strong opening quarter for Hanover, which will meet Littleton tonight at 7 p.m. in the tourney title contest.

Exeter 74, Lebanon 21

Manchester — The Raiders (2-1, 3-2) ran into perhaps the best team in NHIAA Division I and dropped a Queen City Invitational semifinal at Manchester Memorial High School.

The Bluehawks opened a 17-4 cushion after one quarter and ran away with the contest. Ryan Grijalva led three Exeter players in double figures with 15 points, followed by 11 from Michael Leonard and 10 from Kevin Henry.

Wade Rainey finished with a team-best eight points for Lebanon, which meets host Memorial at 6 p.m. in the Raiders’ final holiday tourney contest.

Woodstock 66, Hartford 42

Brandon, Vt. — Harrison Morse drained seven 3-pointers on his way to 28 points for the Wasps in the opening round of the MCL East-West Challenge at Otter Valley Regional High School.

Morse had 12 points in the first quarter to help Woodstock lead, 28-15, at halftime. Gabe Marsicovetere added 14 points and Caden White had seven for the Wasps.

Shea Bean had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, for Hartford. Nick Clay had 11 points and Daniel Bushway added 10 points.

Hartford (0-4, 0-5) will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Woodstock (2-1, 3-1) plays for the tournament title against Mill River at 2:30 p.m. Both games will take place at Hartford High.

Windsor 57Green Mountain 46

Chester, Vt. — The Yellowjackets (2-3) scored 37 points in the first half and held on to pick up a road victory.

Robert Slocum led the way with 21 points, including 12 from the free-throw line. Ryland Richardson added 14 points, and Hunter Grela had 13. Windsor closed out the win by limiting Green Mountain to 13 points in the second half.

The Jacks host Thetford on Saturday.

Oxbow 66, Blue Mountain 35

Bradford, Vt. — The Olympians (3-0) erupted for 44 points in the first half to top the Bucks.

Matt Emerson and Bryce Ilsley each had 14 points for Oxbow. Orin Mahikoa added nine and Skyler Ladd had eight points. Oxbow led, 44-24, at halftime.

Coach Steve Carson praised the efforts of Ladd and Jace Page, who each came off the bench and played a big part in sparking the O’s to 23 points in the second quarter. Oxbow hosts Rivendell on Saturday.

Lebanon 44Manchester Central 37

Manchester — The NHIAA Division II Raiders turned up the defensive intensity to beat the D-I host Little Green in the second round of the Doug Chandler Christmas Tournament.

Rebecca Wright had 19 points to pace Lebanon (5-0, 7-0). Molly Smith and Carrie Laramie each added five points. Lebanon trailed, 21-20, at halftime before forcing 12 turnovers and staging a 13-6 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

“We’ve been really good in the third quarters defensively,” Lebanon coach Tim Kehoe said. “We struggled from the foul line late, but it was a really solid effort. I thought we played really well.”

The Raiders lost Megan Gradijan to an injury early in the third quarter. Kehoe praised the efforts of Smith, Laramie and Madison Finnell for stepping up in Gradijan’s absence.

Lebanon will meet Manchester Memorial for the tournament championship on Saturday, the game having been moved 24 hours to avoid today’s inclement weather.

Woodstock 29, Oxbow 26

Woodstock — A pair of freshmen led the Wasps (2-2) over the visiting Olympians (3-2) in a low-scoring battle.

Freshman Jane Lackley had 13 points and classmate Emma Tarleton added 12 for Woodstock. The Wasps scored 13 points in the second quarter to lead, 19-12, at halftime.

Mariah Shumway had 10 points for Oxbow.

The Wasps host Black River on Saturday, and Oxbow greets Stowe on Wednesday.

Stevens 51, Mascoma 41

Langdon, n.h. — Behind junior Sydney Miller’s career-high 25 points, the Cardinals (1-4, 2-5) topped the Royals (2-4, 2-6) on the second day of the MG Sports Holiday Tournament at Fall Mountain Regional High School.

Stevens won the contest at the free-throw line, shooting 9-for-13 while Mascoma went 3-of-7. Miller produced an 8-for-9 performance at the charity stripe as part of her big night, which also included three of the Cardinals’ six 3-pointers.

Zahna Rice had 10 points, Jenna Pond added eight and Carrie Faro had seven for Stevens, which will play in the Maroon Division title game at 5:30 p.m. today.

Mascoma wrapped up its tournament visit with 11 points from Bella Kondi and nine from Lizz Pelton.

Amsterdam (N.Y.) 65 Hanover 55

Amsterdam, n.y. — The Marauders were slow out of the gate, trailing 22-4 at one point in the first quarter in dropping the opener at the Amsterdam Holiday Showcase.

Hanover rallied back to get within one point at multiple times in the game but never did take the lead. Maddie McCorkle had 15 points for the Marauders. Diana and Lois Schwarz each had 10 points. Charlotte Johnson added eight points.

“We were a little rusty in the first quarter. We got too far behind. Amsterdam is a solid team, but our kids didn’t give up and played hard the whole way,” Hanover coach Dan O’Rourke said.

The Marauders (5-1, 5-2 ) play St. Francois (Quebec) today on day two of the Showcase.

Randolph 49, Hartford 33

White River Junction — Former Whitcomb-Rochester athlete Amelia Mattrick notched a game-high 11 points as the Galloping Ghosts (5-0) remained unbeaten at the Hurricanes’ expense.

Mattrick moved up the road to Randolph over the summer after the closing of the high schools in Bethel and Rochester. She averaged nearly five points a game during the Mountaineers’ 10-10 season last winter.

Kasie Mills had 10 points and Ella Davignon offered eight for the Ghosts, who owned leads of 13-6 after one quarter and 28-10 after two.

Sophomore Davan Murphy had a career-best eight points to lead Hartford (0-5), with Bailey Cameron and junior varsity call-up Elsie Davis finished with five apiece. The Canes host Lyndon on Wednesday.

Boys Hockey

Bedford 5, Hanover 3

Manchester — The Bulldogs came out on top in a rematch of last year’s NHIAA Division I state championship game on day two of the Brian C. Stone Memorial Tournament at JFK Coliseum.

Bedford led, 3-1, after the first period before the Marauders rallied to knot the score at 3-3 heading into the third. The Bulldogs took the lead on a shorthanded goal and then added an empty-netter to close the books.

Curtis Rice, Patrick Daley and Matty Gardner scored for Hanover (3-1-0, 3-3-0). Daley added two assists. Gardner, Rice, Cameron Woods and Tono Correa each had an assist.

Goaltender Luke Ives made 25 saves in his first career varsity game, drawing praise for his play from coach Dick Dodds.

“When your first varsity game is against a team as strong and loaded as Bedford, he played a really nice game for us,” Dodds said.

The Marauders are back in action today at 2 p.m. against Trinity at JFK.

Missisquoi 3, Woodstock 1

Woodstock — The Wasps fell to the visiting Thunderbirds, dropping to 3-3-0 on the season.

Aly Cimis scored unassisted for Woodstock in the third period. Goalie Ava Dodson made 21 saves. The Wasps visit Burr & Burton on Saturday at 5 p.m.
