In Sullivan 6, representing Newport and Unity, the margin of victory for John Callum, R-Unity, over incumbent Virginia Irwin, D-Newport, remained at 30 votes, 1,109-1,079. Callum will join incumbent Skip Rollins, R-Newport, who was the top voter-getter in the two-seat district.
In Sullivan 5, representing Claremont’s Ward 3, Walt Stapleton, R-Claremont, increased his vote total by three and Chad Rolston, D-Claremont, added two votes in the recount. The final tally was 666 to 638 for Stapleton, who replaces Ray Gagnon, D-Claremont. Gagnon did not seek re-election, but was elected Register of Probate for Sullivan County over Republican Timothy O’Hearne.
In the closest recount, incumbent Tom Laware, R-Charlestown, saw his slim victory over John Streeter, D-Charlestown, reduced to seven votes from 10 for the one-seat district. On Election Day, Laware was declared the winner, 835-825. In Friday’s recount, the result was 836-829 for Laware.
Republicans now hold a 7-6 majority in the county delegation of state representatives. An increase of one seat.
