Norwich — The Norwich Racquet Club crowned champions in three divisions and drew competitors from around the Northeast at its annual Green Mountain Open platform tennis tournament on Nov. 2-4. (See photos below.)

The Newburyport, Mass., tandem of Kerry Alvina and Katie Martin prevailed in the Nov. 2 women’s final. They needed three sets to get past Newburyport’s Mindy Pike and Missy McDugel, of York, Maine, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. One day later, New York’s Max Gumpert teamed up with Tuck School student and past GMO champion Julain Camacho for a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Philadelphia’s Mike McGrath and Justin Poletti in the men’s final.

Mixed doubles wrapped up the tournament on Nov. 4. The Stonington, Conn., team of Dan Hansen and Alyce Dwyer claimed the crown in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sam and Courtney Adams, of North Andover, Mass.

Tournament matches were staged both on the NRC courts in Norwich and at the Quechee Club in Quechee.

U14 Girls Draw With Sting

Waterbury, Vt. — The Hanover Wild U14 White girls hockey team twice took one-goal leads but eventually played to a 2-2 tie with the Essex Sting on Sunday at the Ice Center.

Fiona Spence gave the Wild its first lead on a pass from Danielle Rudd. Essex rallied to tie, as it did in the final 2½ minutes of the game to answer a goal from Hanover’s Cam Callahan in the third period.

Claire Falcone assisted on Callahan’s strike and Mattie Cetin kept the Wild in the game with her play in the goal. The Wild and Sting will meet again on Saturday in round-robin play at Union Arena’s Veterans Day Tournament in Woodstock.

On the Run

UVRC Sends ThreeTo NYC Marathon

New York — Three members of the Upper Valley Running Club took to the streets of Gotham to compete in the New York City Marathon on Nov. 4.

Hanover’s Yufeng Guo, 29, had the best time of the trio, completing the 26.2-mile course through the city’s five boroughs in 3 hours, 3 minutes, 22 seconds, good for 1,457th place out of a field of nearly 53,000 finishers.

UVRC member Hedda Burnett, 36, from Brooklyn, N.Y., finished in 3:51:49 and was 11,186th overall. Canaan’s Jim Burnett, 68, also raced in New York and posted a time of 4:10:57 to place 18,171st.

Norwich Turkey Trot

Norwich — Runners, walkers and volunteers are being sought for the 10th edition of the Norwich Turkey Trot road race on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 22.

The race offer two routes, one covering 4.4 miles and another covering 2 miles around the town. The event benefits the Upper Valley Haven, and although there is no fee to hit the starting line, participants are asked to provide a cash, food or clothing donation for the Haven to join in.

This is a dog-friendly event, although leashes are required. Turkey Trots and other gear also will be available for donations of $20 or more.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers to help run the races and take donations. For more information, contact Molly Turco at 802-310-0422.

Zack’s Place Race

Woodstock — Zack’s Place is back to host its annual Turkey Trot fundraiser, scheduled for Thanksgiving morning in Woodstock.

The 5K road race, which drew nearly 1,700 people last year, helps Zack’s Place, a community enrichment center for youths and adults with special needs. The 5K race is open to walkers and runners, at a pre-registration cost of $30. The cost increases to $35 for day-of-race registrations.

Lebanon Thanksgiving Basketball Tourney

Lebanon — The Lebanon Police Department is teaming up with the Carter Community Building Association to hold its annual youth three-on-three basketball tournament on Nov. 25, the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.

The tournament consists of multiple divisions for boys and girls in grades 5-12. Each team can have up to four players, and teams will play 12-minute contests in a double-elimination format. Tournament rules are available at lebanonnh.gov/1096/Annual-Basketball-Tournament.

Referee Clinic in WRJ

White River Junction — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department will hold a basketball officials clinic for young and first-time referees on Dec. 2 from 1-2 p.m. at the Dothan Brook School.
