Earl C. North, 89, died Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Lebanon Center Genesis in Lebanon, NH.
Earl was born October 11, 1928 in Newport, RI, the eldest son of Earl and Bertha (Tingley) North. He graduated from Wickford High School in North Kingstown, RI in 1945. Earl immediately joined the Army and was stationed in post-war Germany, then served in the Korean War, and was again stationed in Germany as a member of the 7th Army Symphony.
Upon his honorable discharge he attended Capital University in Columbus, OH, majoring in bassoon performance. There he married Mae Mararian on July 7, 1956. They had met when they were both stationed at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas.
Earl went on to pursue a master’s degree in music performance from Indiana University and later the University of Vermont. The family moved to Canaan in 1963, where he taught music at Mascoma Valley Regional and Newport High Schools.
Throughout his life Earl arranged and published music for student use and taught at the Upper Valley Music Center. He was a member of the Cadenza Woodwind Quintet and Sunflower Quartet, as well as several area music groups, including Suite Notes. Earl was a member of Rails to Trails and Friends of Mount Cardigan.
Earl continued to serve his country in the Army National Guard, retiring as a Sergeant 1st Class in 1993. Mae died in 2017.
Earl is survived by daughter Bonnie North of Milwaukee, WI, son Carl “Chris” North of Rota, Spain, sister Margaret Kenyon of North Kingstown, RI, and many nieces and nephews and their families.
