Dr. Sandra Wong, a surgical oncologist at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, is leading a team of researchers at D-H to integrate the use of “patient-reported outcomes” by oncology providers in a bid to improve the management of symptoms and reduce hospitalizations, D-H said in a news release on Thursday.
“Post-operative symptom management is an underutilized strategy for improving surgical care,” Wong said in the news release, saying it will especially benefit patients who travel “great distances for their operations.”
The funding from NCI also is associated with the “Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative,” named for the late son of former Vice President Joe Biden.
The other health care systems sharing in the funding are Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in Boston, Baptist Memorial Medical Center in Memphis, Lifespan Cancer Institute in Rhode Island, West Virginia University Cancer Institute and Maine Medical Center in Portland.
