Hanover — A rough second period proved to be the biggest difference on Friday night for the Dartmouth College men’s hockey team in a 7-1 loss to No. 19 Princeton on Friday night at Thompson Arena.

Princeton (1-1-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) scored four times in the middle frame, taking advantage of a long power play and putting away the Big Green.

Dartmouth sophomore Matt Baker scored the goal that sent a sea of tennis balls onto the ice for the second year in a row, and freshman goalie Justin Ferguson had an assist in his first collegiate appearance.

It was a tough night for the first-year netminder, though, as the defending ECAC champions put on an offensive clinic in front of him, scoring seven times, including twice on the power play in the early part of the second period as the game started to slip away.

The Tigers’ Ryan Kuffner — an All-American a season ago — scored twice and had three points, while linemates Alex Riche (1-3-4) and Max Veronneau (0-2-2) added another six points. On defense, Josh Teves registered three assists, while Derek Topatigh scored twice.

Princeton goaltender Ryan Ferland was another difference maker in the game, turning aside 32 shots as Dartmouth actually controlled play for long stretches. The home team was unable to capitalize on those lengthy possessions while the visitors scored quickly. Austin Shaw came into the Princeton net for the final seven minutes and made four saves of his own.

Down 3-0, Baker finally got the home team on the board with his first of the season at 10:17 of the stanza, the latest the “tennis ball goal” has been scored since Feb. 22, 2002, when Chris Baldwin scored 1:57 into the second period.

Ferguson finished with 20 saves on the night in addition to his assist. Connor Yau also got credit for a helper on the play as his long stretch pass hit Baker in stride heading into the zone.

The Big Green is back in action at 7 p.m. tonight at home against No. 15 Quinnipiac.
