The masters swimmer from Etna set a lifetime-mark ninth world recors last weekend when he competed for the Upper Valley Rays masters team in the 10th Leaf Peepers Masters Mini Meet at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.
The 55-year-old went after three standards in the record book during the meet. His time of 28.16 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke missed the world standard by a half-second but was still good enough for a new regional mark. He set a new national standard in the men’s 55-59 age group with a time of 26.55 in the 50 butterfly, missing the world record by one-tenth of a second.
Bedford finally grabbed his ninth world mark in the 100 back, posting a time of 1:00.78 that clipped six one-hundredths off the previous record.
Nineteen UVRays swimmers combined to set additional standards at the meet:
■ Arnold Meardon broke regional records in the men’s 85-89 division in the 50 fly (1:07.26) and 100 individual medley (2:28.79).
■ Marilyn Williams also set two marks in the women’s 70-74 class, in the 25 freestyle (24.23) and 25 breaststroke (30.31).
■ Glenn Johnson broke the 50 backstroke mark (45.51) in his age group).
■ Rob Starkey, competing in every available butterfly event for men ages 40-44, set new meet records at 25 meters (13.94) and 200 meters (2:49.75).
■ Nick Holt, in the men’s 45-49 class, set a meet standard in the 25 free (14. 29).
■ Jim Larrick, among men 35-39, claimed “fastest man in the pool” honors with a meet-record 12.11-second clocking in the 25 free.
