Concord, N.H. — Frances Maxfield Evans, born Oct. 4, 1925, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018. Daughter of Ira H. Maxfield and Iva S. Maxfield, widow of Robert Jay Evans, a marriage that lasted 69 years. Frances was born and raised in Concord.

She was a member of the Concord High School class of 1943 where she enjoyed playing sports. She was a member of the field hockey, basketball, and softball teams. Fran also played the flute in the band.

As a registered nurse, she graduated from the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. Her nursing career included positions at Memorial Hospital in Concord, summer camp nurse at Camp Red Fox in Bristol, N.H. and Camp Tohkomeupog in Madison, N.H., the Mary Hitchcock Clinic in Hanover, N.H., The Upper Valley Visiting Nurse Association in Norwich, Vt., and was the school nurse in the Granby, Mass. school system. Later in life she and Jay worked at the Information Booth on the Dartmouth College Green.

Fran enjoyed acting and was a member of several theater groups in Virginia and Massachusetts and with the Dartmouth College Players in Hanover. She was the founder and past president of the Friends of Clapp Memorial Library in Belchertown, Mass., a volunteer at the Howe library in Hanover, N.H. and the Etna, N.H. Library. Other volunteer activities included the Hanover Garden Club, Etna Ladies Aid Society, Montshire Museum in Norwich, the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital gift shop and St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Fran was a lifelong New England Patriots fan and she enjoyed gardening, sewing, dabbling in watercolor and oil painting and traveling to Switzerland and Bermuda with Jay.

Frances is survived by a son Eric M. Evans (Jessica Heller) Putney, Vt.; a daughter Anne E Leonard (James) Jackson, N.H.; beloved grandchildren Kate Hood, (Alexander) of Dillon, Colo., Nicholas E. Leonard (Jeannette) of Carbondale, Colo.; two great-grandchildren Eloise and Rex M. Hood of Dillon; and several nieces and nephews. Fran is predeceased by her daughter Heidi.

She lived a full and wonderful life. A private family burial is planned at a future date.
