The names of the two victims, whose southbound sedan rolled over into the median, are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Vermont State Police said in a news release on Thursday afternoon.
The driver of the 2010 Kia Forte was traveling near mile marker 66 when his vehicle left the roadway, went into the median and rolled over. The vehicle came to a rest on its roof, the release said.
One of the men was ejected from the car and died at the scene, while the other was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with “life-threatening injuries,” according to the release.
The status of his injuries weren’t known on Thursday evening.
It is unknown whether either occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the release said.
Traffic on Interstate 91 northbound came to a halt around 10:45 a.m., which is the time the crash was reported.
DHART, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock medical helicopter, landed on the interstate in the northbound lanes and departed roughly a half-hour after arriving. Police cruisers and fire trucks lined the interstate for several hours.
There were fresh skid marks on the southbound side of the highway, leading into the median.
Officials closed both lanes of northbound traffic at the Hartland/Windsor exit from about 11 a.m. to noon before reopening it to one lane. The road was fully reopened by 3 p.m.
The road conditions at the time of the crash were dry and the sky was clear, according to the release.
