Waterville, Maine — After battling the hosts to open knockout play, the Lebanon 12U all-star youth baseball team bowed out of the New England Regional Cal Ripken tournament last Thursday, dropping a 14-4 decision to Washington Park, R.I.

Lebanon earned the second seed out of its group with a 2-1 record, beating Thetford-based Central Vermont and Fall River, Mass., before dropping its final group contest to Maine’s Androscoggin Valley. That netted a quarterfinal against host Waterville, Maine, which Lebanon took in a tight 5-4 game.

Bennett Hewett starred for Lebanon in the victory. The second baseman made a diving catch to deny a Waterville run and threw out a baserunner at third base to end a rally by the hosts. He then came up in the bottom of the fourth inning and delivered a solo home run to break a 4-4 tie and send Lebanon home victorious.

Hewett also earned the mound win, throwing the final three frames with six strikeouts, no walks and three hits. Hewett finished with two RBIs, while teammates Bodie Benoit and Zach Gaudet had one each.

Washington Park ended Lebanon’s run a day later. Benoit and Zachary Aldrich led the squad with 2-for-3 days at the plate, and Dawson Bates provided Lebanon’s other hit. Aldrich and Dominic Petkus both drove in runs.
