Williamstown, Vt.
Zach Dexter started the rally in the second inning with a leadoff single. Ryan Woodbeck followed with a single and the bases were loaded when Noah Martel bunted and reached on an error. Johnny Vogelien followed with a two-run single.
Zach Gould added an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Dylan Ricker, Dashiel Fukushima and Charlie Bradley all had RBI hits before the inning was over to help the Raptors build a big early lead.
“Williamstown is a good team in (VPA) Division III and this was on their field. They’re a tough team to play. This is a really good win for us,” Rivendell coach Eric Reichert said.
The win didn’t come easy, though. Gould started on the mound and went the first 6⅓ innings, scattering seven hits and six walks while allowing just three earned runs. Williamstown loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Bradley in to record the save. With a potential walk-off base hit in play, the Raptors recorded the final out on a ground ball in front of the plate.
“(Gould) did a pretty good job for us. He only struck out one so our defense played well behind him. He beared down when he needed to,” Reichert added.
Dexter, Woodbeck, Martel and Ricker each had two hits to lead Rivendell. Ricker would add a RBI single in the fifth inning for the seventh run. The VPA Division IV Raptors (5-4) will visit Sharon on Wednesday.
