Join Lebanon’s Memorial Day Parade

The American Legion Guyer-Carignan Lebanon Post 22 will be holding the annual Lebanon Memorial Day parade and ceremonies on May 28.

The parade will begin lining up at 10:30 a.m. on Eldridge Street near the former Sacred Heart School and will start at 11 a.m., proceeding along Hanover Street and Route 120, pausing at the Hanover Street Bridge for a service, then completely around Colburn Park, along Church Street and into the School Street Cemetery, pausing briefly for a service. The parade will then exit the cemetery onto School Street, proceed down School Street and enter Colburn Park for a Memorial Day service.

We would like to invite you to participate in the parade and honor our veterans, as your hard work makes our community a better place to live in. We greatly appreciate your participation in our community activities.

Please call Pete St. Pierre at 603-448-3429 or email me at Robertpushee@comcast.net by Friday if you plan to participate. If parade movement assistance is needed, please notify us at that time. There will be Legion family speakers along with a city of Lebanon speaker and a guest speaker.

The True ‘Chemtrails’ Conspiracy

At first I thought that Dan Leggett’s Forum letter was satire (“More ‘Chemtrails’ Information Needed,” May 15). He fears that the vapor trails left behind high-flying aircraft are in fact “chemtrails” of nefarious concoctions designed and spread by the government to change the weather, create autism and dementia and, perhaps, to subdue the population and turn us all into complacent “sheeples.” It just seemed so outrageous and ridiculous — until I dug a bit deeper.

Thanks to “The Google,” I learned that it is all true! Every Democrat administration going back to the Cold War has been party to this insidious plot.

I was at first shocked, but I lean liberal. If chemtrails are turning the population into voting Democrats, then OK, I’ll play along and keep my mouth shut.

But then I stumbled upon the true conspiracy. Since taking office, the Trump administration has taken over the chemtrail program and reformulated the chemical vapor to now turn us all into Republicans.

So, of course, I am now opposed to the program and intend to become part of the ChemTrail Resistance. If I have not been chemically converted into a Republican by 2020, I intend to vote Trump and his chemtrail comrades out of office.

So everyone can stop worrying and take solace in the knowledge that it is the liberals and progressives who are falling under the influence of all the bad vapors floating in the air these days. They are slowly being converted by the evil chemtrails and turned into complacent Republican voting zombies — or at least they are becoming tolerant of right-wing behavior that they would have previously thought objectionable.

The war is all but won.

Now I have to go read my news feeds. Oddly, I’ve replaced CNN and the Huffington Post with Breibart and The Blaze. Interesting stuff that.

The Search for Truth Is Problematic

Thank you for publishing the May 15 letter about the need for more information about chemtrails. The possibility that chemicals are being dispersed over our heads for nefarious purposes is worthy of consideration, and I applaud your decision to publish the view that this is indeed happening.

The search for truth is complicated by the possibility that the people responsible for chemtrails have waged a successful campaign to keep the truth from us. In light of this, the author of the letter suggests we turn to the internet to find the truth. To me, this is problematic, since for every opinion that exists on any topic, there is a YouTube channel dedicated to it. The truth is in there somewhere, but it is well hidden.

As an alternative, may I suggest that we apply critical thinking to the problem, and more important, that we put more emphasis on scientific skepticism and critical thinking in our daily lives, and in our schools. All high school graduates should understand the basics of the scientific method, scientific consensus, logic, evidence and motivated reasoning. And they should know how to do a quick estimation of the density of aerosols in our atmosphere.

Why don’t we do this? Probably because the government has a secret program to prevent us.

In Praise of the Daily Newspaper

I am a newspaper fan. In fact, I may be one of the founding members of the Valley News fan club. With sadness but recognition, I read Washington Post columnist David Von Drehle’s opinion piece (“Finding News After Newspapers Are Gone,” May 14), in which he laid out the main reason for the “dying” of the daily paper: It is so much easier to get the news of one’s particular interest — sports, food, films, politics, etc. — on the internet.

Yet, this is the exact reason why we need the daily newspaper. Many of our politicians are entrenched in their own ideological positions. So are many of us. And the Great God Internet knows exactly what those positions might be, which makes it so easy for inaccurate, outrageous and, sometimes, disturbingly violent news to head our way.

We are informed by a system that our internet habits have constructed, so that we read only what pleases us. This makes it so easy to validate our highly intelligent opinions.

One of the blessings of the daily newspaper is its variety. We can be introduced to new ideas, new interests, even new ways of doing things, by being brave enough to read a daily newspaper carefully and thoroughly. Local newspapers provide a particular service by keeping us informed about our widely diverse neighborhoods and the eclectic people who inhabit them.

When I drive through the metropolis of Hanover, I am always alert to the pedestrian fixated on her or his electronic device. Walking down the street reading the newspaper is much more difficult for the pedestrian, and, therefore, much easier for the driver.
