Rutland — Even when some of its top players are unavailable, the Woodstock Union High girls tennis team is a tough bunch to stop.

The defending VPA Division II state champions improved to 8-0 on Friday with a 7-0 blanking of Mount St. Joseph at Rutland’s Meadow Street courts. The Wasps lacked sisters Momo (tests) and Kenzie Biele (illness), fifth singles player Chloe Noble had no foe to meet, and still Woodstock cruised.

Grace Frazier (6-0, 6-0) and Katie McMaster (6-0, 6-1) moved up a slot on the singles ladder and won easily. Lydia Howe and Olivia Marsicovetere, who usually team up for first doubles, took third and fourth singles, respectively, and also claimed straight-set wins.

Izzy Hiller and Julianna Beraldis moved to first doubles for a 6-0, 6-1 win. Lily Holding and Natalie Strayton joined the varsity for a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second doubles, further displaying coach Tom Hopewell’s many options.

“We have the fortune to be able to do this,” Hopewell said. “Our top seven players are almost all interchangeable. Momo and Grace have considerable weaponry. All of the others are just dangerous.”

Woodstock returns to the road to visit Rutland on Monday.
