Newbury, Vt. — A 20-year-old motorist from Derby, Vt., died by suicide during a traffic stop along Route 5 in Newbury on Wednesday, according to Vermont State Police.

The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. on Route 5 near Moore Hill Road when Trooper Tyler Davidson, of the St. Johnsbury, Vt., barracks, conducted a motor-vehicle stop, state police said in a news release.

After speaking with the driver of the vehicle, Austin M. Durocher, Davidson went back to his cruiser to check Durocher’s information. As he performed that check, Durocher, who still was seated in the vehicle, shot himself with a firearm, the release said.

The trooper wasn’t injured.

“The investigation into this matter is ongoing, but all indications are that Durocher took his own life,” an updated news release said.

Davidson stopped Durocher because of an expired inspection sticker, the release said.

The situation prompted officials to close Route 5 temporarily between Snake Road and Newbury Crossing.
