Newport — When the rain came down, the Newport High baseball team got down to business.

Kyle Fish broke a 6-6 tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning and Tony Robertson followed with a ground ball that led to an error and another run as the Tigers outlasted Mascoma, 8-6, at a wet Bill Bates Field on Friday. Newport (4-2) pulled itself together when it matters on a day when coach Jon Hamel said his Tigers weren’t at their best.

“We came out very flat; we weren’t ready to swing at the beginning of the game,” Hamel said. “We played with no sense of urgency today. Fortunately, we squeaked by with the win.”

Getting a rare start on the mound, J.T. Blaine shook off early nerves to keep Newport in the contest. Blaine threw 4⅓ innings of seven-hit, five-strikeout, three-walk action, yielding to Cody Turgeon in the fifth. Turgeon held Mascoma (1-4) scoreless from there, fanning three over 2⅔ frames for the win.

The Royals did their best to get through Newport’s pitchers, rattling 10 hits on the day. Caleb McAlister and Ethan Brueckner finished with two apiece.

Daniel Lee added a two-run single for the Tigers, who visit Newfound this afternoon. Mascoma goes to Stevens on Monday.

Hanover 12, Con-Val 0 (5)

Norwich — The Marauders (2-2) supported starting pitcher Nolan Gantrish with a ton of offense to reach the .500 mark in advance of today’s visit from NHIAA Division II-leading Goffstown.

Gantrish allowed only an infield hit over five innings in a game shortened by the 10-run rule. Gantrish walked two and struck out two.

Charlie Goodrich and Moises Celaya both went 3-for-4 for Hanover; Celaya scored three times and drove in three runs, while Goodrich had two runs and an RBI. Kegan Silovich and Jack Loftus both had two hits, and Braxton McNulty contributed a hit and two runs. A seventh-run fourth inning secured the victory.

Hanover entertains Goffstown at the Dresden Fields at noon today.

Windsor 9, Rutland 1

Rutland — Adam Stapleton surrendered just a single unearned run in a six-inning pitching effort as Windsor (6-2) won in impressive fashion to start a three-games-in-four-days stretch.

“Stapleton really stepped up,” said Windsor coach Jamie Richardson of Stapleton, who usually plays first base. “He went up against a D-I opponent, and he pitched well. He pitched to contact and let the defense field the ball. He really pulled us out of a jam, pitching-wise.”

Seth Balch, Duncan Frazer and Josh Gaudette all had two hits for eight-hit Windsor. Frazer drove in three runs, Balch scored twice and Gaudette crossed the plate once. Ryland Richardson worked seventh in relief of Stapleton to lock down the win.

Stevens 10, Fall Mountain 9

Claremont — The Cardinals (3-3) sweated out a Fall Mountain comeback attempt from a 10-4 deficit, getting the final out with two Wildcats on the basepaths in the top of the seventh.

Drew Grenier settled down after a four-run, 37-pitch opening frame to earn the win despite having to be pulled with two gone in the sixth when he reached his 120-pitch limit. Trey Theriault used a force grounder to get Stevens out of that jam, and Ethan Johnson posted the save by getting the game’s final two outs after relieving in the seventh.

Grenier finished with nine strikeouts, four walks and seven hits allowed. Tyler Bonneau had a team-high three hits, Grenier and Aidan Cahill amassed two hits each, Johnson provided a key RBI single and Gabe Miller posted his first varsity RBI on a sac fly in the home fourth that ended up plating the game-winning run.

Woodsville 17Blue Mountain 12

Woodsville — After losing starting third baseman Zach Moore to a knee injury, the Engineers exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to reverse an eight-run deficit.

A Blue Mountain baserunner caught Moore’s knee with his helmet trying to get back to the bag in the third inning, requiring a trip to the hospital for the Woodsville infielder. Coach Brent Cox said the incident fired his squad up: “They wanted to retaliate with the bats.”

Woodsville did just that in the sixth, scoring its last 10 runs with two outs. Seanon May legged out a solo home run to get it started, Travis Stoddard tripled home a run and scored on an error and 10 different Engineers provided hits in the frame. It all made a winner of reliever Tyren Hartford, who tossed three-hit ball over the final three inning with five strikeouts and two walks.
