Local Roundup: Panthers Pump Out the Offense

Thetford — The Thetford Academy baseball team required a couple of tools to get in Saturday’s game against Northfield. Then the Panthers showed they had the tools to win.

After utilizing a wet-dry vacuum and sump pump to remove standing water from the infield, Thetford exploded for 15 runs in the fourth inning for a come-from-behind, 19-7 win over the Marauders in five innings.

“With the help of our AD (Blendon Salls) and grounds crew, we were able to make the field playable,” Panthers coach Phil Chaput said. “The umpires told us that if it became unsafe, we’d have to end it, but thankfully we were able to get the whole game in.”

The Panthers led, 4-0, after three innings but trailed, 7-4, entering the fifth.

Thetford rallied big against Northfield’s second reliever. Lawson Ouelette (2-for-3, two runs, three RBIs), starting pitcher Dan Wells and Aidan Moore (2-for-3, three runs, two RBIs) combined for three consecutive doubles, and Aiden Cuddhea (3-for-4, two runs, RBI) had another two-bagger as Thetford scored eight times with two outs.

Chaput was perhaps most pleased with the way the Panthers played with the chance to end the game early in the top of the fifth because of the mercy rule.

With reliever Ryan Pepe on the hill, Thetford got the second out on a fielder’s choice and picked off the runner at first when he wandered off the bag to converse with a coach.

“After scoring 15 runs, it would have been easy for us to kind of relax, but we stayed focused to shut them down in the top of the fifth,” Chaput said.

Pepe finished with four hits, one strikeout and one walk in 1⅔ innings in relief of Wells (three innings, seven runs, six earned, four hits, four walks).

Thetford visits Oxbow on Tuesday.

Oxbow 7, Montpelier 1

Bradford, Vt. — Lincoln Ilsley struck out six and surrendered one walk and four hits in his start to lift the O’s to 3-2.

Trevor Moore was 3-for-3 with a two-RBI double in the third inning. The Olympians host Thetford on Tuesday.

South Royalton 5, Sharon 4South Royalton 8, Sharon 0

Chelsea — Sharon dropped a doubleheader against South Royalton to fall to 0-3.

Sharon starter Aidan Trimble gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one, erasing a 4-3 Phoenix lead. Trimble gave up five runs and struck out four in five innings.

Sharon’s Kyle Hedgepath had two hits and Sam Knoerlein hit a double in the loss. The Royals’ Carder Stratton was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and pitched 4⅓ innings with nine strikeouts, giving up one walk and two hits.

In game two, Sharon managed only three hits — a single and a double by Hedgepath and a single by Knoerlein.

Jake Hewitt and Dominick Craven combined to pitch a shutout for the Royals, for whom Craven made his varsity debut. George Carr was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Dominick Small was 3-for-4 with a run.

Sharon travels to Chelsea, whose field is home for both teams, on Friday. South Royalton (4-0) hosts Chelsea on Monday.

Blue Mountain 18Whitcomb-Rochester 8 (5)

Wells River — Timber Russell was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Zach Rhoades was 1-1 with two walks and two runs as the Mountaineers fell to 0-2.

Whitchester pitchers gave up a combined 10 walks. Rhoades pitched three innings and surrendered five runs in the start. Blue Mountain’s Jared Cushing and Tyler Curtis were each 1-for-3 with three runs scored.

Newport 13, Kearsarge 3 (5)

Newport — Cody Turgeon set the tone with a 3-run home run in the first inning and finished with 5 RBIs as the Tigers improved to 2-1 in a makeup game from Friday’s rainout.

Kyle Rossiter allowed no hits with six strikeouts and four walks in his first outing in two years. Rossiter missed all of last season with a shoulder injury.

Kyle Fish (2-for-3), Tony Robertson (2-for-2) and J.T. Blaine all scored three runs for Newport.

Because of washouts, the Tigers have eight games scheduled during the next 13 days, beginning on Monday at Sunapee.

KUA 6, Vt. Academy 0

Saxtons River, Vt. — Kyle Hammond had five of KUA’s 14 hits in a shutout of Vermont Academy.

Andrew Hadlock and Trey Parker had two hits apiece. Parker had three RBIs and Hammond two.

Eli Jaynes and Parker each threw three shutout innings and Kyle Young pitched the seventh frame.

Softball

Oxbow 18, Rivendell 0 (5)

Bradford, Vt. — The Olympians made quick work of the Raptors for their fifth consecutive victory.

Madison Fornwalt twirled a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks, while Melanie Neil (3-for-4, double, RBI, three runs), Amber Glaude (2-for-3 and Madie Wright (1-for-1, RBI, run) stood out at the plate.

Oxbow visits Lamoille on Monday while the Raptors visit Whitcomb-Rochester on Monday.

Hartford 15Bellows Falls 4

Westminster, Vt. — Ten Hartford batters finished the game with at least one hit and Bailey Bean pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and two walks.

Carrie Comstock led the way with two hits. The Hurricanes (2-2) host Woodstock on Monday.

Thetford 33Northfield 4 (5)

Thetford — Brooke Horniak stuck out three and hit a double as the Panthers improved to 2-0. Thetford travels to Oxbow on Tuesday.

Fair Haven 27, Windsor 2

Fair Haven, Vt. — Hannah Wood hit a solo home run and Kristin Clark drove in Brooke McKeen in the fourth inning to round out Windsor’s scoring. The Yellowjackets (1-4) host Stevens on Monday.

Boys Lacrosse

Hartford 6, Otter Valley 0

Brandon, Vt. — The Hurricanes (4-1) bounced back from their first loss with a decisive road win.

Hunter Hutchinson had a goal and two assists and Joey Batchelder scored twice for Hartford.

Dawson Nalette, Jacob Derosier and Andrew Knight added one goal each for the Canes, while goalie Kyle Prior made nine saves.

Woodstock 12, Rice 7

South Burlington, Vt. — Lucas Piconi scored four times and Caden White (goal, four assists) and Cullen McCarthy (three goals, two assists) had five-point games as the Wasps (3-1) won their third in a row.

Micah Schlabach added two goals, Patrick Potter and Jed Astbury each scored once and Field Willis and Trevor White had single assists. Gabe Marsicovetere made 11 saves for Woodstock, which led, 8-2, at halftime.

Hanover 19, Nashua North 9

Hanover — Graham Penfield had six goals and four assists as Hanover (3-5) dominated Nashua North.

Kyle Rozzi, Sylas Oberting, Pete Warhold and Colter Lingelbach-Pierce added two goals apiece for the Marauders, and Charlie Baughman, Brian Pattison, Colin Rozzi, Fletcher Kaplan-James and Alex Mosenthal each had one. Baughman had two assists and Toño Correa, Caleb Morse and Rozzi had one.

Hanover outshot Nashua, 62-12, and won 26 of 31 faceoffs, all by Brigham.

Girls Lacrosse

Hanover 14, Oyster River 10

Hanover — Maddie McCorkle scored five goals and had nine draw controls as the Marauders improved to 3-4.

Jess Seibel scored four goals and had an assist. Hanna Kingston, Jasmine Lou, Cate Wagner and Isabelle Sangha all scored for Hanover. Senior goaltender Katelyn Hurd made nine saves.

The Marauders travel to Goffstown on Tuesday.

Hartford 15, Harwood 6

Moretown, vt. — Alice Dwyer scored four goals and assisted once and Michaela Ricker (two assists) and Zoey Pfeiffer (assist) added three goals each as the Hurricanes improved to 4-0.

Tayler Simmons had two goals and an assist and Morgan Pero (two assists), Greer McCarty and Carolyn North scored one goal each for the Canes.

Goalie Emi Harlow made 12 saves for Hartford, which led, 9-3, at halftime.

Burr & Burton 15Woodstock 6

Manchester, Vt. — Brittney Poljacik scored three goals and Sidney Pilot netted two as Woodstock fell to 0-3.

Izzy Jones also scored for the Wasps. Addie Gray had two helpers, Gina Sorrentino had an assist. Maggie Parker made 13 saves. The Wasps host Rutland on Thursday.

Track and Field

Oxbow, Hartford Excel

Windsor — Hannah Giesing won two events, Izzy Giesing captured the 800 and the sisters helped the 4×400 team win as Oxbow’s girls competed well at the Windsor Invitational.

Hannah Giesing won the 200-meter run in 27.55 seconds and the 400 in 61.04 while also placing in the top six in the long jump.

Izzy Giesing won the 800 in 2:15.07 while placing in the top six in both the triple jump (33-03) and javelin. The Giesings joined Tyrus Rosten and Emily Carson for a victory in the 4×400 with a time of 4:21.16.

Hartford’s Ileana Sirois took the 100 hurdles (16.02 seconds), long jump (16-05) and triple jump (34-11) and was the anchor for Hartford’s winning 4×100 relay team with Eleanor Hinckley, Morgan White and Gretchen Josselyn.

Whitcomb’s Alexandra Timmons won the 3,000 meters (11:43.1), Woodstock’s Grace Vollers won the javelin (120-00), Thetford’s Macy Lawson captured the high jump (4-10) and Windsor’s Anna Thornton took the pole vault (7-00).

For the boys, Hartford’s Abayomi Lowe won the 100- (11.44 seconds), 200- (23.14) and 400-meter runs (51.21; breaking an 18-year-old school record), and teammate Riley Kehoe captured the 110 hurdles (17.82 seconds).

Oxbow’s Timothy Hodges won the high jump (5-06.00), and South Royalton’s Connor Lambert set a school record of 19 feet, 7 inches in the long jump while finishing second.
