South Royalton — The final season of South Royalton School baseball began on a high note on Saturday. Playing at long last under blue skies and with the mercury on the rise, the Royals edged visiting Rivendell by a 3-2 score.

The Raptors scored in the third and fifth innings to hold a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Zach Gould and Dashiel Fukushima each scored for Rivendell.

SoRo rallied with a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. George Carr started the inning with a double and would eventually come in to score on a passed ball. Eighth grader Arliss Spaulding got on base with his first career varsity hit, a bunt single. Spaulding scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by freshman Carder Stratton.

“We have a young team to begin with, and today we were really young,” South Royalton coach Devin Cilley said. “The boys played well today. I was impressed with the way they battled today to get the win.

Logan Martin pitched the first 4⅓ innings for SoRo, striking out four. Jacob Hewitt threw 2⅔ innings of relief and had three strikeouts. The Royals fielded a lineup that that included three eighth graders (Spaulding, Dominic Craven and Austin Tracy) along with a freshman (Stratton). Dominick Small doubled and scored an RBI single by Martin in the fourth inning. Small finished 2-for-3 for SoRo, the only Royal to record multiple hits.

South Royalton (1-0) will visit Blue Mountain on Monday. Rivendell hosts Sharon on Tuesday.

Oxbow 13, Blue Mountain 11

Bradford, Vt. — The Olympians rallied with six runs in the sixth inning to beat the Bucks.

Sullivan French helped keep Oxbow within striking distance prior to the late rally with three shutout innings of relief. Cody Grant started and Hunter Locke recorded his first career save with a clean seventh inning on the bump.

Locke had the offensive highlight of the day with a three-run double for Oxbow. Locke finished with two hits. Trevore Moore added two hits and two RBIs. Orin Mahikoa had a double.

Oxbow (2-1) visits Randolph on Tuesday.

Windsor 12, Woodstock 2 (5)

Windsor — The Yellowjackets (4-0) led 10-0 after the first two innings and got a combined no-hitter to top the Wasps.

Seth Balch tossed the first three innings for Windsor, striking out six while walking one. Ben Meagher came on in relief to start the fourth but didn’t record an out while allowing two walks and hitting a batter. Adam Stapleton relieved and went the duration, striking out four.

Meagher led the Jacks at the plate with two of the team’s five hits. Meagher had a two-run double and a two-run single to key the early outburst. Windsor hosts Thetford on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

KUA 6, New Hampton 5

New Hampton, n.h. — The Wildcats (4-0) kept up their unbeaten ways with a come-from-behind win over the Huskies.

Plainfield’s Kyle Young had a big day at the plate, delivering four two-out RBIs that went a big way in making KUA’s afternoon. Jonah Silverman and Kyle Hammond both had two-hit games for Kimball Union. Meriden’s Trey Parker grabbed the win in relief.

The two Lakes Region rivals meet again at Powers Field in Meriden on Wednesday.

Softball

Blue Mountain 8, Oxbow 5

Bradford, Vt. — The Olympians were undone by defensive miscues in falling to the visiting Bucks.

Maddie Fornwalt went the distance in the circle for Oxbow and struck out 16. The Olympians were in an early hole after surrendering four unearned runs in the first inning. At the plate, Fornwalt added a triple. The Olympians (0-1) visit Woodstock on Tuesday.

Track & Field

Raiders’ Roper Wins Twice

Penacook, n.h. — Lebanon’s Marcus Roper won two events to lead the local contingent at the Merrimack Valley Invitational.

Roper won the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 7.5 inches and the discus with a toss of 152-10. Teammate Zach Herndon took fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (46.59 seconds). Colm Seigne was second in the 800-meter run for the Hanover boys in 2:04.61.

Anna Stafford won the pole vault for the Hanover girls, clearing 8-0. Stafford added a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. Zoe Onyango was second in the 100-meter dash for the Marauders in 13.51 seconds. Ella Maclean was fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.84). Leila Trummel was fourth in the 800 meters and sixth in the 1,600 meters. Christine Aman added a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters.

Lebanon’s Kath Merchant won the girls shot put with a toss of 38-9.5 and added a third-place finish in the discus (120-4). Kim Merchant was fifth in both the discus (93-9) and the javelin (104-0), and Grace Furlong placed fifth in the 3,200 meters (12:20.0).

Boys Lacrosse

Yarmouth (Maine) 8, Hanover 7

Yarmouth, Maine — The Marauders (0-5) dropped the second game of their two-day swing through the Pine Tree State, despite some strong individual performances.

Yarmouth, Maine’s Class B finalist last year, scored the first three goals of the second half for an 8-5 lead, taking advantage of Hanover’s clearing difficulties. The Marauders closed the gap to a goal and had four shots in the final minute but weren’t able to force overtime.

Charlie Baughman posted a hat trick and Graham Penfield struck twice with three assists for Hanover. Tono Correa and Alex Mosenthal also scored, Brian Pattison had one assist, Brendan Brigham won 13 of 17 faceoffs and Sylas Oberting scooped up five ground balls for Hanover.
