“The cafe is a place for people to come in, socialize and have a bite to eat,” said Amber Johnston, director of volunteer services for Upper Valley Haven. “We aim to provide reliable and ongoing access to prepared food.”
Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts in the cafe from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The role includes tending to the cafe and keeping it tidy, and food preparation for those interested, although it is not required.
While the cafe doesn’t serve meals, per se, it does provide quick bites for people who come to utilize Upper Valley Haven’s other services, including the food pantry.
“It’s a wonderful way to give back to the community and get to meet people in a social, positive environment,” Johnston said.
Volunteers should be at least 18 years old, and be able to commit to one 2-hour shift each week. Johnston said that because the position is fairly low key, it’s the perfect way to begin volunteering with Upper Valley Haven.
“We rely on volunteers,” she said. “It’s the only way we can do any of the services we offer, and this is a nice way to ease yourself in.”
In addition to volunteers for the cafe, Upper Valley Haven is currently looking for people to help cook dinners, work at the food shelf and in the garden, which grows more than 80 varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs.
