Claremont — TLC Family Resource Center in Claremont is looking for a committee of volunteers to help plan the Born to Run 5K, the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, which will take place on, Saturday, Sept. 22 this year.

This year the organization is hoping to create a family fun day that will happen alongside the race, which takes place on the Cornish Fairgrounds. TLC will be relying more on volunteers to run the event and help create a vision for the family fun day, said Neil P. Allen, the AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with TLC.

“We’re really changing from the organization leading the project to the committee of volunteers leading the project,” he explained. Because of that TLC is looking for six volunteers, including a an event coordinator who will oversee the 5K and family fun day.

TLC staff decided to incorporate a family fun day in order to interact with more families and children as part of the event, and to help more people learn about the resource center’s mission of supporting local families. The organization hopes volunteers will help decide exactly what that will look like.

“We really want to leave it to the committee to come up with their vision of what they think it should be,” Allen said. “They can focus on how to expand it. We don’t want to limit them on what they want to do.”

Planning for the race and family run day will begin next month. Allen said the event planner role will likely involve a commitment of one hour a month, with more time needed as the September event gets closer.
