New London, N.H. — Barbara D. Hinman passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Devoted to the legacy of her family being the mother of five children, grandmother of nine and great grandmother of 11.

The daughter of Thomas J. Dent and Ellen Carter Dent was born in Hanover, N.H. May 6, 1929. Barbara cherished her Hanover upbringing, the treasure chest of friends and the strong connection to Dartmouth College. Barbara’s father Tommy Dent, being the soccer and lacrosse coach at Dartmouth College. Barbara considered Hanover “paradise to grow up in.” The environment of Hanover and the availability of Dartmouth Outing Club nurtured Barbara’s passion for skiing and her love of the mountains and fishing.

In 1947 Barbara attended Colby Junior College. Barbara continued throughout her life to support Colby.

Richard H. Hinman became her husband June 21, 1948. They raised their family in Riverside, Conn., Barrington Ill., New Canaan Conn. and Amherst, N.H. The other family gathering place was their home in “Wangan” Sugarloaf, Maine, where the Hinman family spent some of their best times together Skiing on The Mountain.

Barbara and Dick launched into a loving partnership that lasted 65 years.

New London was their chosen place for retirement. Barbara was involved with her church, the rock garden at the Fells and many events at Dartmouth and Colby-Sawyer College.

A Celebration Of Life will be held at Saint Andrews Church on April 8 at 1 p.m., followed by a reception at the Lake Sunapee Country Club.
