Enfield — There might not be a lot of pennies at the Mascoma Football Boosters’ annual Old-Fashioned Penny Social on Saturday, but there will certainly be a lot of prizes.

“It’s our newest fundraiser,” said Laurie Shawn, vice president and board member of the booster club.

A penny social is a type of raffle that involves putting tickets into a basket in front of each prize. Toward the end of the evening, the tickets are drawn and the winners are announced.

“We have a huge variety of prizes,” said Shawn, ranging from gift cards to area businesses to toys and household items. Parents and friends of football players are also asked to contribute a gift basket.

“It could be a cooking basket or a wine basket or a baking basket, whatever you want to choose,” Shawn said.

The event takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Enfield Community Building, 308 Route 4. The cost of raffle tickets varies based on how many are purchased. Concessions are also available for purchase.

Last year — the fundraiser’s first — more than 100 people turned out and about $1,000 was raised.

“It was a full house,” Shawn said. “We did not have enough seating and we thought we had plenty.”

The nonprofit organization fully funds a Mascoma-area junior high football program, outfitting the team “head to toe” and paying for referees, coaches, ambulance coverage and equipment.

The group also donates $5,000 each year to the high school’s varsity team and sponsors the Kolten Gunn Scholarship for two graduating students each year.

“Most of us have had children play, even though they’re older now,” Shawn said. “I think it’s a wonderful thing. It’s people who really take the time and put the work in to keep the program going for the kids.”

Other fundraisers for the organization include a pancake breakfast, an Easter dessert sale and a family game night and cribbage tournament.

“Having everyone come out and really be supportive is wonderful,” Shawn said.

The Mascoma Football Boosters f ully fund a junior high football program. An earlier version of this column incorrectly stated which program the boosters support financially.
